71 schoolgirls rescued from a NYC tunnel

A routine field trip turned into a major rescue operation when a group of 71 students from the Toras Emachu Jewish school in Monsey, New York, got lost underground. The girls were exploring the Memorial Park area when they followed a ravine and accidentally wandered into a massive storm drainage tunnel. What started as an outdoor excursion quickly sparked panic among chaperones and local authorities as the realization set in that the students were missing.

The Underground Rescue

The tense situation ended in relief thanks to a sharp-eyed police officer patrolling near Memorial Park. The officer spotted the students popping out of a manhole cover in the village of Nyack. It turns out the girls had walked nearly 800 meters through the dark, winding underground network before finding an exit.

First responders quickly flooded the scene and confirmed that everyone was accounted for. While the vast majority of the students walked away completely unscathed, two girls required medical care:

  • On-site treatment: One student was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

  • Hospital transport: A second student was taken to a local hospital after complaining of abdominal pain.

71 girls from an Orthodox Jewish school in Monsey were rescued after becoming lost in underground drainage tunnels connected to a sewer system. The students were on a field trip when they

Investigating the details

Local police have launched an investigation into how the group managed to wander so far off track and are currently interviewing witnesses.

Although there was “definitely concern over the violation of that law,” Nyack Village Administrator Andy Stewart told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the school group had not received a permit to hold a school trip in the park on Wednesday and that he was unsure of how the local government would deal with the school.

“We didn’t know they were there because they didn’t have a permit, and they didn’t make any plans with the village,” Stewart stated. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency repeatedly asked the Toras Emachu school for comment, but the school did not reply.

The Hidden Dangers of Urban Exploring

Underground infrastructure like storm drains and utility tunnels are incredibly dangerous. They pose hidden risks like sudden flash flooding, toxic air quality, and structural collapses. New York officials are using this frightening incident as a reminder of how vital strict supervision is during school trips, especially when students are near complex urban or suburban drainage systems.
