Kremlin Confirms Russia and US to Hold High-Level Talks in Riyadh

The Kremlin has confirmed that senior Russian and US officials will meet in Riyadh on Tuesday. The discussions will focus on diplomatic ties, negotiations on Ukraine, and a potential presidential summit.

Kremlin Announces High-Level Talks

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the announcement during a press briefing in Moscow on Monday. He stated that the Russian delegation would be led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential aide Yury Ushakov. The US delegation will include senior officials, though their names have not been disclosed.

“Today, on behalf of President (Vladimir) Putin, Foreign Minister Lavrov and Presidential Aide Ushakov are flying to Riyadh,” Peskov said. He emphasized that the meeting aims to restore full diplomatic engagement between Russia and the United States.

Key Topics on the Agenda

The discussions will focus on three main issues. First, officials will address the current state of Russia-US relations and explore ways to improve diplomatic ties. Second, they will discuss preparations for negotiations on the conflict in Ukraine. Finally, the meeting will examine the possibility of a direct meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

Saudi Arabia as a Neutral Venue

Peskov noted that Saudi Arabia was chosen as the venue because both nations find it acceptable. The Gulf nation has maintained strong ties with both Washington and Moscow, making it a strategic location for such high-stakes diplomacy.

The Kremlin spokesman also mentioned that talks involving European nations on Ukraine remain premature. This indicates that Moscow and Washington are prioritizing bilateral discussions before including other stakeholders.

US-Russia Relations at a Critical Juncture

Relations between Russia and the US have been strained in recent years due to sanctions, geopolitical tensions, and the war in Ukraine. However, both sides have signaled interest in renewed dialogue. The upcoming meeting could mark a turning point in efforts to de-escalate tensions and find common ground.

The outcome of the Riyadh talks may influence future diplomatic efforts. If successful, they could pave the way for direct negotiations between Putin and Trump. The international community will closely watch the developments as both sides navigate complex political and security challenges.

Further details on the meeting’s outcome are expected following the discussions on Tuesday.
