Finnish President Alexander Stubb says the 27-nation bloc EU must “think big” and take use of the opportunity to project strength on the international scene. He articulated his vision for a much larger European Union.
Expansion of EU
Speaking on Wednesday at an energy conference in the capital of Finland, Stubb stated that the EU should work to expand its membership to 40 states, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Turkey, Norway, and Iceland as possible candidates.
His remarks coincide with certain nations reevaluating the advantages of EU membership due to the Trump administration’s activities and Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.
Size over strength
Stubb said at the Eurelectric Power Summit that “the window of opportunity” for EU membership “is quite short because when the war in Ukraine ends and perhaps when the U.S. administration changes, I don’t know, then people are going to take their foot off the gas pedal and start heckling about unnecessary stuff again.”
Stubb also stated that “European strategic autonomy or European geopolitical power” means “often based on size and scale and I think the best European policy ever has been European enlargement.”Right now, we must think broadly and geographically. We must expand or at the very least establish memberships that are adaptable enough to include a total of forty European states, or even non-European ones,” Stubb stated.
Integration of Turkey and Balkan states
Stubb also stated that he would be open to having a real conversation about Turkey’s position and actively investigating the potential of Iceland, Norway, and the Western Balkans in terms of future membership.
The official EU procedure for Ukraine’s and Moldova’s admission to the Union is also mentioned in this context, which calls for more work from European institutions and the global community.
The leader’s declared stance reflects Finland’s and other nations’ desire to stimulate debate on the Union’s most ambitious enlargement in history,
Can UK and Canada be a part of EU
The president of Finland stated that the EU should focus on its western flank and reintegrate the United Kingdom, which left the group in 2020, or at least “as close as possible.”
According to Stubb, Canada ought to be taken into consideration. “If Canada were the 28th state of the European Union instead of the 51st state of the United States, wouldn’t that be lovely?”
Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has expressed his desire to conquer Canada. Earlier this week, Trump shared a Bloomberg news piece about Canada going into a technical recession for the first time since 2020 on Truth Social, writing “51st state!” in the post.
How practical is the ambition?
Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s bold proposal to expand the EU to 40 nations including partners like Canada and the UK is a call for raw geopolitical realism. He argues that in a dangerous world shaped by Russian aggression and a shifting US alliance, Europe must prioritize size and scale to project global strength before its temporary window of opportunity closes. However, this “think big” strategy carries a massive risk: by rushing to expand without first reforming its decision-making rules, the EU could dilute its internal unity and transform from a powerful, highly integrated union into a loose and slow-moving alliance.
