Who is Mohammad Mokhber, Iran’s Interim President?

In the wake of a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of President Ebrahim Raisi and several key officials, Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed as Iran’s interim president. His accession, approved by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, places Mokhber at the forefront of Iran’s political landscape during a critical transitional period.

Early Life and Education

Born in Dezful in the Khuzestan province, Mohammad Mokhber, now 68, has a background in electrical engineering and holds a PhD in international law. His career began in the fields of banking and telecommunications, where he served as the head of the Khuzestan Telecommunications Authority and later as the deputy governor of Khuzestan in the 1990s.

Leadership at Setad

Mokhber is perhaps best known for his 14-year tenure as the head of Setad, the Organisation for the Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order. Setad, a powerful economic conglomerate, was established by Iran’s first supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, to manage and oversee charitable affairs. Under Mokhber’s leadership, Setad expanded significantly, amassing assets worth tens of billions of dollars and maintaining a direct connection to the office of the supreme leader.

During his time at Setad, Mokhber faced international scrutiny and sanctions. The U.S. Treasury sanctioned both Setad and Mokhber in 2021, accusing the organization of human rights abuses and the confiscation of land and property from regime opponents. Despite these challenges, Setad played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic, developing COVIran Barekat, the main domestically produced vaccine in Iran.

Vice Presidential Tenure

In August 2021, Raisi appointed Mokhber as the first vice president of Iran. This role, established following the 1989 abolition of the prime minister position, is appointed rather than elected and carries significant executive authority. Mokhber’s responsibilities included overseeing numerous government development projects and representing Iran on international trips. Notably, he led delegations to countries like Russia to discuss arms transfers, highlighting his role in high-level diplomatic engagements.

Sanctions and International Relations

Mokhber’s political career has not been without controversy. In 2010, the European Union sanctioned him for his alleged involvement in Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. However, these sanctions were lifted in 2012. His close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the supreme leader’s office have been instrumental in his political ascent.

Ascension to Interim President

Following the untimely death of President Raisi, Mokhber was swiftly appointed as interim president. He convened an extraordinary meeting with judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to ensure a smooth transition. According to Iran’s constitution, a new presidential election must be held within 50 days.

In his first statements as interim president, Mokhber emphasized his commitment to continuing Raisi’s policies and maintaining stability. “We will follow the path of Raisi in fulfilling the duties entrusted to us without any disruptions,” he stated.

Future Prospects

As interim president, Mokhber faces the dual challenge of managing Iran’s internal affairs and navigating its complex international relations. His extensive experience in executive management and strong political connections will be crucial as he leads the country through this transitional period. The upcoming election will be a pivotal moment for Iran, determining the future direction of its leadership.

Mohammad Mokhber’s rise to the position of interim president marks a significant moment in Iran’s political history. From his early career in telecommunications to his influential role at Setad and his tenure as first vice president, Mokhber has demonstrated a capacity for leadership and resilience. As he steps into this new role, all eyes will be on how he steers the nation through this critical juncture.
