White House Reveals North Korean Missiles Used by Russia in Ukraine Strikes
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The White House has disclosed that Russia utilized short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) sourced from North Korea to conduct recent strikes against Ukraine. The revelation, based on newly declassified intelligence, underscores a significant and concerning escalation, prompting the United States to raise the issue with the United Nations Security Council.

National security spokesperson John Kirby addressed reporters, condemning North Korea’s arms transfer to Russia and emphasizing the need for additional sanctions against those facilitating such deals. The use of North Korean missiles by Russia marks a notable development in the ongoing conflict and has drawn condemnation from Britain and South Korea.

The United States, in cooperation with its allies, is expected to advocate for stronger measures at the UN Security Council in response to these revelations. The White House is particularly alarmed by the impact of North Korean arms in the conflict, emphasizing the need for global efforts to curb the proliferation of weapons and address the growing complexity of geopolitical challenges.

The White House refrained from specifying the exact type of missiles transferred by North Korea to Russia, but it noted their range of approximately 900 km. Analysts suggest that the missiles in question may belong to North Korea’s Hwasong-11 family, specifically the KN-23 and KN-24 missiles, both of which are solid-propellant SRBMs first tested in 2019.

Jenny Town, director of the Stimson Center’s 38 North Program, highlighted the significance of North Korean involvement, stating that the use of these missiles by Russia prolongs its warfighting efforts in Ukraine. This marks the first known combat use of North Korean missiles, reflecting a concerning development in the ongoing conflict.

The White House anticipates that Russia may continue to use additional North Korean missiles against Ukraine, further complicating the situation. As the international community grapples with these revelations, concerns grow over the potential implications for global security and the need for diplomatic efforts to address the underlying geopolitical complexities.

China, which has ties with both North Korea and Russia, has called for easing tensions and creating favorable conditions for a political settlement in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the United States remains vigilant, monitoring potential arms deals between Russia and other nations, including concerns about Russia’s intent to purchase missile systems from Iran. The use of North Korean missiles by Russia in the conflict emphasizes the urgency of diplomatic initiatives to prevent the further spread of weapons and foster international stability.
