President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy clashed during a tense Oval Office meeting. Trump accused Zelenskyy of being “not ready for peace” as long as the United States remained involved in negotiations. The meeting, originally set to finalize a minerals agreement, turned into a heated exchange over Ukraine’s war with Russia.
Trump Warns Zelenskyy About World War III
Tensions escalated when Trump warned Zelenskyy, “You’re gambling with World War III.” The comment came after the Ukrainian leader questioned U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s stance on diplomacy. Zelenskyy pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin had violated past ceasefire agreements. Vance responded, saying, “I’m talking diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country.”
When Zelenskyy suggested that Americans would eventually feel the impact of the war, Trump cut him off. “Don’t tell us what we’re gonna feel,” Trump said. “You’re in no position to dictate that.”
Trump Cancels Minerals Deal After Argument
Following the exchange, Trump announced that the minerals deal with Ukraine would not be signed. He later wrote on Truth Social, “He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for peace.”
The White House confirmed that all planned agreements between the U.S. and Ukraine had been put on hold. A scheduled joint press conference between Trump and Zelenskyy was also canceled.
U.S. Considers Ending Military Aid to Ukraine
After the dispute, reports emerged that Trump’s administration was considering stopping all military aid to Ukraine. The aid package, worth billions, includes radars, vehicles, ammunition, and missiles. The Washington Post cited a senior U.S. official who confirmed the administration’s discussions on the matter.
European Leaders Rally Behind Zelenskyy
European leaders responded swiftly to the Oval Office confrontation. President of European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and European Council head António Costa reaffirmed their support for Ukraine.
“Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader,” said Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, “Ukraine can rely on Germany – and on Europe.” French President Emmanuel Macron declared, “Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the aggressed people.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson said, “He retains his unwavering support for Ukraine.” However, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán praised Trump for “standing bravely for peace.”
Republicans and Democrats Split Over Trump’s Actions
Trump’s treatment of Zelenskyy drew mixed reactions in the United States. Democratic lawmakers condemned Trump and Vance’s handling of the meeting. They called it “shameful” and “disgraceful.”
Republican leaders, however, defended Trump. They argued that he was putting “America first.” Senator Lindsey Graham, once a strong supporter of Ukraine, called on Zelenskyy to resign.
Moscow Reacts with Approval
The Kremlin welcomed the dispute. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev mocked the incident, calling it a “brutal dressing down in the Oval Office.”
Meanwhile, Russian forces continued attacks on Ukraine. A Russian drone strike hit a medical facility and other targets in Kharkiv. At least five people were injured, and dozens of buildings were damaged.
The fallout from the Trump-Zelenskyy clash has left uncertainty over U.S. support for Ukraine. The meeting, meant to strengthen diplomatic ties, has instead deepened divisions between Kyiv and Washington.
