Sudan’s Armed Forces to Resume Peace Talks with RSF in Jeddah
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a renewed effort to quell the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have announced their plans to resume peace talks with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Saudi port city of Jeddah. The peace negotiations, mediated by Saudi Arabia and the United States, aim to bring an end to the deadly clashes that have plagued the nation since April 15. This development comes after a prolonged suspension of talks due to significant differences between the warring parties.

Negotiations Set to Resume in Jeddah

Deputy commander of the SAF, Shams-Eddin Kabashi, made the announcement during a speech delivered to army officers at the Wadi Seidna military base in Omdurman. He confirmed the SAF’s commitment to the negotiations, stating, “Our delegation will go to Jeddah and begin negotiations on coming Thursday.”

Media reports in Sudan have suggested that both Saudi Arabia and the United States, acting as mediators since May, have chosen October 26 as the date for the resumption of these critical negotiations. These talks hold the key to finding a lasting solution to the conflict, which has had a devastating impact on Sudan.

Deadly Clashes and Humanitarian Crisis

The conflict, which began on April 15, has resulted in a staggering death toll, with at least 3,000 people losing their lives. The Sudanese Health Ministry has reported more than 6,000 injuries stemming from the violent clashes between the SAF and the RSF. This ongoing turmoil has left communities devastated and struggling to cope with the aftermath.

Furthermore, the UN International Organization for Migration has highlighted the profound impact of the conflict on the civilian population. They estimate that nearly 5.8 million people have been displaced, both internally within Sudan and beyond its borders, as a result of the ongoing hostilities between the SAF and the RSF.

Hope for a Resolution

As the two opposing sides prepare to sit down for peace talks in Jeddah, there is a glimmer of hope that a peaceful resolution may be within reach. The mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia and the United States underscore the international community’s commitment to bringing an end to the Sudanese conflict and alleviating the human suffering it has caused.

The resumption of negotiations offers an opportunity for both parties to revisit their differences, find common ground, and work toward a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement. Such an agreement is vital not only for the stability of Sudan but also for the well-being of the millions who have been affected by the conflict.

While the road to peace may still be challenging, the commitment of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to return to the negotiating table signifies a positive step forward. The international community remains vigilant in its support for a peaceful resolution that will end the deadly clashes and allow the people of Sudan to rebuild their lives and communities.

As the talks in Jeddah approach, the world watches with hope that the warring parties will seize this opportunity to end the suffering and pave the way for a brighter future for Sudan.
