Pakistan’s Exports to Afghanistan Surge by 92% in Ten Months
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Pakistan’s exports to Afghanistan have surged by 92% in the first six months of the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The State Bank of Pakistan reported that total exports to Afghanistan reached $504 million between July and December. This sharp increase highlights the growing trade relationship between the two neighboring countries.

Imports from Afghanistan Also Rising

Pakistan’s imports from Afghanistan have also seen a major jump. According to official data, imports from Afghanistan grew by 125.85% during the same period. This increase reflects a stronger trade flow between the two nations, driven by growing demand for Afghan goods in Pakistan.

Total Trade Reaches Over $2 Billion

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Afghanistan reported that total trade between the two countries stood at $2.065 billion in the first ten months of the 1403 solar year. Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, the ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed that Afghanistan exported goods worth $655 million to Pakistan. Imports from Pakistan totaled $1.4 billion during this period.

Traders Demand Fewer Restrictions

Despite the increase in trade, Afghan traders and industrialists are concerned about trade restrictions. They are urging Pakistan to remove barriers that hinder Afghan exports. Many traders argue that higher taxes on transit goods passing through Karachi have increased costs. Afghan businessman Zalmai Azimi called on Pakistan to ease these restrictions.

Calls for Trade Balance

Afghan industrialists emphasize the need for a balanced trade relationship. Abdul Jabar Safi, head of the Kabul Industrialists Association, said that Afghanistan should focus on controlling imports and boosting exports. Many Afghan business leaders believe that reducing reliance on imports will strengthen Afghanistan’s economy.

Key Goods in Trade

Afghanistan exports coal, onions, cotton, tomatoes, and pomegranates to Pakistan. These agricultural and mineral products are in high demand. On the other hand, Pakistan exports rice, medical drugs, cement, sugar, textiles, and fresh fruits to Afghanistan. These consumer and industrial goods play a key role in Afghanistan’s domestic markets.

Future of Pakistan-Afghanistan Trade

The sharp rise in trade indicates a strengthening economic relationship between the two countries. However, unresolved trade barriers remain a challenge. Afghan traders continue to push for better trade policies, while Pakistani officials focus on increasing exports. The coming months will determine whether both countries can achieve a more balanced and efficient trade partnership.
