Oman says it has no intention of normalizing relations with Israel
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The phrase normalizing relations has become a contentious topic in Middle Eastern diplomacy, particularly concerning Israel. In a recent statement, Oman has made its position clear on this matter, emphasizing its commitment to Palestinian rights and regional stability over diplomatic ties with Israel.

Oman’s Stance on Israeli Relations

Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Issa Al Harthy, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman for Political Affairs, has unequivocally stated that Oman has no intention of normalizing relations with Israel. This declaration comes amid reports of American efforts to foster diplomatic ties between Muscat and Tel Aviv.

Al Harthy’s statement reflects Oman’s broader foreign policy approach, which prioritizes finding a solution to the Palestinian issue over establishing formal relations with Israel. He pointed out that recent normalization efforts between Israel and other countries in the region have not yielded positive outcomes for Palestinians. Instead, Al Harthy argues, these diplomatic moves have been exploited by Israel to continue its mistreatment of Palestinians and delay progress towards establishing an independent Palestinian state.

The Arab Perspective on Palestinian Rights

While acknowledging that Arab countries may have different approaches to regional issues based on their individual interests and priorities, Al Harthy emphasized a unified Arab stance regarding Palestinian rights. He stated, “We believe that with regard to the Palestinian issue, the Arab position and Arab demands are unified regarding the right of the Palestinians to obtain their rights.”

The Omani official called for strengthening Arab unity, suggesting that this could be achieved by enhancing the role of the Arab League and other regional organizations associated with joint Arab action. This approach underscores Oman’s commitment to a collective Arab response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Humanitarian Concerns and International Law

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi added weight to the country’s position by addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He condemned the prevention of humanitarian aid to Gaza’s population, describing it as a crime under international law. Al-Busaidi called upon the international community to conduct an independent investigation into Israeli aggression, particularly focusing on the deliberate targeting of civilians in Gaza and the use of siege and collective punishment.

The Foreign Minister rejected arguments of self-defense to justify Israel’s actions, stating, “Self-defense does not justify genocide and targeting innocent people.” He further emphasized that Israel’s military actions are not necessary for self-defense and condemned the targeting of civilians regardless of their nationalities.

These statements come against the backdrop of escalating Israeli operations in the West Bank and the ongoing conflict in Gaza since October 7. The situation has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and a humanitarian crisis described as catastrophic, with the threat of famine looming over the besieged Gaza Strip.

Oman’s refusal to consider normalizing relations with Israel at this juncture sends a strong message about its priorities in regional diplomacy. By focusing on Palestinian rights and calling for Arab unity, Oman positions itself as an advocate for a just resolution to the long-standing conflict. The country’s stance highlights the complexities of Middle Eastern politics and the ongoing challenges in achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.

As the situation continues to evolve, Oman’s position underscores the importance of addressing core issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict before pursuing broader diplomatic ties. The emphasis on humanitarian concerns and adherence to international law further reinforces the need for a comprehensive and just approach to resolving regional tensions.
