Fears of Assassination over Israel Normalization, Says Mohammed Bin Salman
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has expressed concerns about potential assassination attempts stemming from his efforts to normalize relations with Israel. These MBS assassination fears have become a focal point in discussions with U.S. lawmakers, highlighting the volatile nature of Middle Eastern politics and the risks associated with pursuing peace in the region. This article delves into the intricate web of diplomacy, personal risk, and regional tensions surrounding the proposed Saudi-Israeli normalization deal.

The High-Stakes Gamble of Saudi-Israeli Normalization

Mohammed bin Salman’s pursuit of a grand bargain involving Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the United States represents a seismic shift in Middle Eastern geopolitics. The proposed deal includes U.S. commitments to Saudi Arabia, such as security guarantees via treaty, assistance with a civilian nuclear program, and substantial economic investments. In return, Saudi Arabia would limit its dealings with China and establish diplomatic ties with Israel – a move that would significantly alter the balance of power in the region.

However, this diplomatic endeavor comes with considerable personal risk for MBS. The crown prince has invoked the assassination of Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat, who was killed after making peace with Israel, to underscore the dangers he faces. Despite these risks, MBS appears determined to proceed with the deal, viewing it as crucial for Saudi Arabia’s future and his vision for the country’s modernization.

The Palestinian Question: A Crucial Sticking Point

While MBS is willing to pursue normalization with Israel, he insists on including a credible path to Palestinian statehood in any agreement. This demand has become more pronounced in the wake of the recent Gaza war, which has intensified Arab anger towards Israel. MBS argues that addressing the Palestinian issue is essential not only for regional stability but also for securing his position as the custodian of Islam’s holy sites.

This insistence on Palestinian rights marks a shift from earlier perceptions of MBS as indifferent to the Palestinian cause. Whether driven by personal conviction or political necessity, the crown prince now emphasizes that without resolving the Palestinian issue, Saudi Arabia cannot fully benefit from the economic, technological, and military advantages promised by the deal.

Challenges and Opposition: Navigating a Complex Diplomatic Landscape

The path to Saudi-Israeli normalization is fraught with obstacles, chief among them the stance of the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed never to allow the creation of a Palestinian state, a position echoed by far-right members of his coalition. This intransigence poses a significant challenge to the realization of the grand bargain envisioned by MBS and U.S. officials.

Moreover, the deal faces potential opposition from multiple quarters. Conservative elements within Saudi Arabia, including religious hardliners and some members of the royal family, may view normalization with Israel as a betrayal of Arab and Islamic solidarity. Simultaneously, MBS must contend with the sentiments of younger Saudis who have been galvanized by the recent conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Role of US Diplomacy in Balancing Regional Interests

The United States plays a crucial role in this delicate diplomatic dance. While the Biden administration supports the normalization efforts, it must navigate the complex interests of all parties involved. U.S. officials are working to balance their commitment to Israel’s security with the need to address Palestinian rights and Saudi concerns.

The timeline for realizing this grand bargain remains uncertain, particularly given the upcoming U.S. presidential election. However, there is a sense that regardless of who occupies the White House after November, some version of this deal will likely remain on the table due to its potential to reshape Middle Eastern politics and security dynamics.

As Mohammed bin Salman navigates the treacherous waters of Middle Eastern diplomacy ,MBS assassination fears  expressed underscore the high stakes involved in pursuing normalization with Israel. These MBS assassination fears, whether a genuine concern or a calculated diplomatic maneuver, highlight the complex interplay of personal risk, national interests, and regional dynamics at play. The success of this grand bargain hinges on overcoming significant obstacles, including Israeli opposition to Palestinian statehood and potential domestic resistance within Saudi Arabia. As negotiations continue, the world watches to see if this high-risk strategy will lead to a new era of peace and cooperation in the Middle East or further exacerbate existing tensions.
