EU Urges China’s Diplomatic Intervention on Ukraine and Iran
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The European Union (EU) is calling upon China to wield its influence over Russia to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine and to curb Iran’s proliferation of missiles and drones. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen voiced these expectations following discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Paris, emphasizing the need for collective action to address pressing global challenges.

In a meeting at the Elysee Palace alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, von der Leyen underscored the importance of China’s role in urging Russia to halt its aggressive actions in Ukraine. She expressed confidence in President Xi’s ability to help defuse tensions amid escalating nuclear threats from Russia, emphasizing the criticality of diplomatic efforts in preventing further escalation.

The talks coincided with an announcement from the Kremlin regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s order for nuclear drills, a move prompted by Western discussions of potential troop deployments to Ukraine. Macron had previously stated France’s willingness to provide military support to Ukraine if requested, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Beyond the Ukrainian crisis, von der Leyen also stressed the significance of China’s intervention in curbing Iran’s expansion of ballistic missiles and drone capabilities. The EU looks to China to play a constructive role in mitigating these security concerns and fostering stability in the region.

In addition to security matters, trade relations featured prominently in discussions. Von der Leyen and Macron urged Xi to ensure fair and balanced trade relations, citing concerns over market access disparities and state subsidies. The EU remains committed to safeguarding its market against unfair trade practices, signaling its readiness to take decisive action if necessary.

Xi’s visit to Europe, his first in five years, comes amid growing tensions over trade issues, with both the EU and China scrutinizing each other’s industries. Despite these challenges, all parties emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation in navigating the complexities of the global landscape.

As the world grapples with uncertainty and change, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of partnership between China and Europe in addressing shared challenges. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue and cooperation, recognizing the need for collective action in confronting global issues.

EU’s call for China’s intervention marks a significant step towards addressing pressing security concerns and promoting stability on the global stage. As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community looks to collective action to navigate the complexities of an evolving geopolitical landscape.
