Displaced Palestinians Return to Devastated Gaza After Phase-1 of Ceasefire Begins

The long-awaited ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on Sunday, bringing a temporary halt to the conflict. After over 15 months of relentless war, displaced Palestinians have started their journey back to what remains of their homes. The truce began at 11:15 am local time, following a delay ordered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Mass Displacement and Devastation

Gaza’s population of 2.3 million endured mass displacement during the war. Entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble, forcing families to flee multiple times. As the truce took hold, tens of thousands of Palestinians returned to an apocalyptic landscape. In Jabalia, in northern Gaza, streams of people navigated the ruins of their former homes. In southern Gaza, residents of Khan Younis celebrated the chance to go home.

Returning to Rubble

The destruction in Gaza is overwhelming. Piles of debris and destroyed infrastructure dominate the scenery. In Jabalia’s as-Saftawi area, displaced families walked along damaged roads, carrying their belongings. Many expressed relief and sorrow, knowing their homes were gone. “I want to kiss the soil of Gaza,” said Wafa al-Habeel, who yearned to return to Gaza City and reunite with loved ones.

Lingering Violence Before the Ceasefire

Even as the ceasefire was delayed, Israeli airstrikes continued. Gaza’s civil defense agency reported at least 19 Palestinian casualties just hours before the truce began. These attacks highlighted the fragility of the agreement and the lingering tensions.

Challenges Ahead

Rebuilding Gaza will be a colossal task. The war left critical infrastructure destroyed, including hospitals, schools, and water systems. Aid agencies have called for urgent international assistance to address the humanitarian crisis. Palestinians returning to their homes face immense challenges as they seek to rebuild their lives amid the devastation.

Calls for Accountability

The war left an indelible mark on Gaza and its people. Human rights organizations have demanded accountability for the widespread destruction and loss of life. Advocacy groups continue to push for a sustainable resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope, but Gaza’s journey to recovery remains fraught with challenges. The displaced Palestinians’ return underscores their resilience and determination to rebuild their lives in their homeland.
