Devastating Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan, Leaving Over 2,400 Dead and Thousands Injured
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a tragic turn of events, a powerful magnitude-6.3 earthquake rocked western Afghanistan on Saturday, leaving a trail of destruction, chaos, and despair in its wake. The devastating quake struck near Herat, toppling rural homes, injuring more than 10,000 people, and destroying hundreds of houses. Shockingly, the death toll has now surged past 2,400 individuals, according to the Taliban government. As rescuers tirelessly search for survivors amidst the ruins of razed villages, the nation grapples with an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.

Rescuers Race Against Time

The magnitude-6.3 earthquake, followed by eight powerful aftershocks, struck remote and hard-to-reach areas situated approximately 19 miles from Herat’s provincial capital. This relentless seismic activity reduced twelve villages in Zindah Jan and six in Ghoryan district to rubble. “Many more people are still under the rubble,” a government spokesperson lamented. Desperate rescue teams from Helmand and Kandahar have arrived in Herat, facing the daunting task of extracting survivors and providing vital aid.

Plea for International Aid

In the village of Sarboland in Zindah Jan district, devastated families faced a nightmarish ordeal. Homes lay in ruins, and people waited anxiously in the open, with their possessions scattered in the unforgiving wind. The Herat regional hospital, inundated with injured patients from Herat and nearby provinces, reached capacity swiftly. “Vans filled with dead bodies are arriving here each minute,” a medic at the hospital grimly reported. Public parks and streets in Herat city were filled with residents who sought refuge outdoors after rumors of another powerful earthquake circulated on social media.

“We call on all international aid groups to help us at this time to rescue our countrymen and women’s lives,” pleaded a Taliban official. The situation is dire, with survivors left with nothing, desperately requiring food, clothing, tents, and medicine. Many affected areas are home to refugees who recently returned from Iran and Pakistan, compounding the tragedy. “Help us in whatever means you can,” the plea continued.

Afghanistan’s Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Footage from Herat province reveals apocalyptic scenes, with villages reduced to rubble and people pulling their loved ones’ lifeless bodies from the wreckage. “A catastrophe is unfolding here,” warned a resident of the severely impacted Zindah Jan district. The local governor also urged people to assist those in need in the affected villages, as the devastation is widespread.

Afghanistan has already been grappling with a dire humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by the withdrawal of foreign aid following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. In June 2022, a powerful earthquake struck the eastern part of the country, flattening homes and leaving countless people homeless. With winter fast approaching, the affected areas face harsh conditions, adding to the urgency of immediate aid and suitable shelter provision.

In conclusion, this earthquake ranks as Afghanistan’s deadliest in two decades, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to seismic activity. The humanitarian crisis deepens as the nation faces the dual challenges of a catastrophic earthquake and a dire shortage of resources. With the death toll rising and countless families left devastated, international aid is urgently required to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people in their time of desperate need.
