Chinese President Xi Jinping Likely to Skip G20 Summit in India, Fueling Speculation About Diplomatic Relations
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a surprising turn of events, it appears that Chinese President Xi Jinping is poised to skip the upcoming G20 summit, set to take place in India next week, according to reliable sources in both India and China. While the reasons behind this decision remain undisclosed, speculation runs rife about its potential implications for international diplomacy. Premier Li Qiang is expected to step in as the representative of Beijing during the critical Sept 9-10 meeting in New Delhi.

Premier Li Qiang to Represent China

Sources have revealed that Premier Li Qiang will likely stand in for President Xi at the G20 summit in India. Two Indian officials, including a diplomat stationed in China, along with an official from another G20 nation, have confirmed this development. This significant substitution marks an intriguing shift in China’s representation at the summit. Notably, Spokespersons for both the Indian and Chinese foreign ministries have yet to issue any official comments regarding this matter.

Uncertainty Surrounding Xi Jinping’s Absence

The absence of President Xi Jinping from the G20 summit raises questions and uncertainties among diplomats and global observers. While two sources in China indicated that they were informed of Xi’s expected absence by Chinese officials, the reasons behind this decision remain concealed. All parties involved in divulging this information have chosen to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the matter. This surprising turn of events has left many speculating about the underlying factors driving China’s decision to have Premier Li Qiang attend the summit instead.

Anticipation of Meeting Between Xi and Biden Continues

The G20 summit in India had garnered considerable attention as it was considered a potential platform for a meeting between President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden. The two superpowers have been actively seeking ways to stabilize their relations. Their last encounter took place on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November the previous year. However, with President Xi’s expected absence, this anticipated meeting hangs in the balance, leaving diplomats and world leaders eager for updates on future diplomatic engagements.

In the midst of this uncertainty, anticipation continues to grow regarding the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden. While the G20 summit may no longer serve as the stage for this encounter, the forthcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders Meeting in San Francisco on Nov 12 to 18 remains another potential opportunity for these two leaders to engage in diplomatic discussions. As the world watches closely, all eyes are on the developments surrounding President Xi Jinping’s absence from the G20 summit and the evolving landscape of international diplomacy. The diplomatic chessboard continues to shift, leaving nations and leaders to adapt to this unexpected turn of events.
