Greenland ready to work with US on defence, says PM
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Greenland has expressed a willingness to strengthen its defense and resource exploration cooperation with the United States. Prime Minister Mute Egede made this announcement during a press conference on January 10 in Copenhagen. His remarks come as the US shows renewed strategic interest in the Arctic region, particularly Greenland’s vast resources and location.

US-Greenland Strategic Importance

Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, holds significant geopolitical value due to its position on the shortest route between North America and Europe. The island also hosts a large US space facility and possesses rare earth mineral deposits essential for high-tech devices and batteries. These factors have increased Greenland’s relevance to American security interests.

Trump’s Renewed Focus on Greenland

President-elect Donald Trump has revived discussions about acquiring Greenland, calling it a necessity for US and global security. During his first term in 2019, Trump proposed purchasing the territory, sparking international debate. Now, as he prepares for his second term, he has not ruled out using military or economic leverage to secure US interests.

Prime Minister Egede has firmly stated that Greenland is not for sale. However, he emphasized Greenland’s openness to global cooperation and trade. “It is Greenland’s decision on what agreements we pursue,” Egede said. He added that while Greenland values dialogue, its sovereignty remains non-negotiable.

Denmark’s Position on US Interests

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also addressed Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland during a press conference in Jerusalem. He acknowledged American concerns about Arctic security and expressed Denmark’s readiness to collaborate with Greenland on continued talks.

“We aim to ensure legitimate American interests through detailed dialogue,” Rasmussen said. He avoided direct criticism of Trump’s approach, highlighting Denmark’s commitment to avoiding conflict while supporting Greenland’s autonomy.

Broader Implications of US Ambitions

Trump’s Arctic ambitions are part of a broader pattern of strategic interests. Besides Greenland, Trump has expressed interest in acquiring the Panama Canal and integrating Canada into the US through economic measures. These moves signal an assertive approach to expanding American influence in key regions.

Prime Minister Egede underscored that Greenland’s land and resources are its own responsibility. He remains committed to balancing international partnerships with protecting Greenland’s autonomy.

Greenland’s Next Steps

The coming months will test Greenland’s ability to navigate complex geopolitical pressures while safeguarding its sovereignty. As dialogue with the US unfolds, the territory’s leadership faces challenges in addressing global demands for its resources and strategic location.

Greenland’s cooperation with Denmark and international partners will play a crucial role in shaping the Arctic’s future. For now, Egede’s government remains firm on its stance: Greenland welcomes collaboration but will not compromise its sovereignty.
