Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen trilateral cooperation aimed at promoting regional peace, security, and economic integration. During an informal meeting held in Beijing on May 21, 2025, the foreign ministers of the three countries emphasized enhancing diplomatic ties and advancing joint initiatives under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Key Highlights of the Trilateral Meeting

  • Extension of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan:
The meeting focused on expanding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a flagship BRI project, to include Afghanistan. This extension is expected to facilitate regional connectivity, boost trade, and foster economic development across South Asia.

  • Commitment to Regional Security and Counterterrorism:
Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan jointly stressed the importance of combating terrorism and cross-border militancy. The three countries pledged to increase intelligence sharing and coordinate security efforts to maintain stability in the region.

  • Upcoming Sixth Round of Trilateral Dialogue:
The ministers agreed to hold the sixth round of their trilateral foreign ministers’ dialogue in Kabul soon, underscoring the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement for peace and prosperity.

Pakistan-Afghanistan Bilateral Relations Strengthen

Parallel to the trilateral meeting, Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi held a telephonic discussion to further strengthen bilateral ties. They expressed satisfaction over recent progress following Dar’s visit to Kabul on April 19, 2025. Both leaders committed to expanding cooperation in trade, economic development, people-to-people exchanges, and reactivating political consultation mechanisms.

Importance of Trilateral Cooperation for South Asia

The trilateral cooperation between Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan comes at a critical time when the region faces persistent security challenges and economic needs. Extending CPEC into Afghanistan can provide significant infrastructure development, create trade opportunities, and promote regional economic integration. Coordinated efforts to tackle terrorism and militancy are crucial for sustainable peace.
