Iraqi Prime Minister Discusses Bilateral Ties and Road Construction with Turkish President
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On Friday July 14, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani spoke by phone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on bilateral relations and the proposed road construction project connecting the two countries. Both leaders expressed their commitment to building regional and international collaborations for their countries’ economic development.

Al-Sudani Emphasizes Iraq’s Commitment to Partnerships

During the phone talk, Prime Minister al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s dedication to building strong regional and international partnerships that would contribute to the economic development of both friendly and brotherly countries. By prioritizing these alliances, Iraq aims to enhance its national economy and foster cooperation in various sectors.

Erdogan Affirms Turkish Companies’ Readiness for the Development Road Project

President Erdogan, in response to al-Sudani’s remarks, expressed the willingness of Turkish companies to participate in the Development Road Project. This project, proposed by the Iraqi government in May, seeks to establish a transportation corridor spanning from the southern Iraqi province of Basra to the Turkish border. The ultimate goal is to connect southern Iraq to Türkiye, enabling access to European rail and road networks. Erdogan’s support for Turkish companies’ involvement underscores the commitment to the region’s progress and the mutual benefit of such infrastructure endeavors.

The Development Road Project’s Significance and Potential Impact

The proposed Development Road Project holds immense importance for both Iraq and Turkey. By establishing a transportation corridor between Basra and the Turkish border, the project will facilitate the movement of goods, people, and resources, leading to increased trade and economic cooperation. Moreover, the connection to European rail and road networks will open up new avenues for regional integration and economic growth, benefiting not only Iraq and Turkey but also neighboring countries in the region.

The phone conversation between Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani and Turkish President Erdogan underscored the commitment of both nations to strengthen bilateral ties and pursue mutually beneficial projects. With Iraq’s emphasis on building partnerships and Turkey’s readiness to engage in the Development Road Project, the prospects for enhanced trade, economic development, and regional integration are promising. The realization of this infrastructure project will not only facilitate connectivity between Iraq and Turkey but also foster greater cooperation among neighboring countries, paving the way for a prosperous future in the region.
