Germany’s intelligence agency has published a report criticizing pro-Palestinian symbols and expressions. The list includes several slogans that the Palestinian supporters have used in order to garner support for the cause. The report has associated the use of these symbols with Palestinian extremist activism.
Germany’s crackdown on activists:
Since the beginning of the conflict, Germany has taken a strict stance against Pro-Palestine activists, claiming that they create an overall violent environment and incite hate speech against the Jews and Israel. To further its stance, a German Intelligence agency Federal Office for the Protection of Constitution (BfV) has released a list of symbols that mark a threat to the state of Israel. The report claims that the activists show “their hostility towards Israel, whose right to exist they regularly refuse to recognise and against which they often agitate in a manner contrary to international understanding”.
BfV Flags Pro-Palestinian Symbols
The Federal Office for the Protection of Constitution linked these slogans to “secular Palestinian extremism” and claimed that they are a threat to Israel. The report has criticized the following symbols:
1. Yalla, Yalla, Intifada
The slogan like “Yalla, Yalla, Intifada” which translates to uprising or shaking-up justify use of violent means to ignite civilians. The report claimed that slogans like these can be “interpreted as an expression for sympathy”.

2. The watermelon
The agency highlighted that the sliced watermelon symbol depicted “entire state of Israel” in Palestinian colors hence stripping away Israel’s “right to exist”.

3. Handala
Handala was a cartoon character made by a 10-year old refugee boy to express the refugee experience of Palestinians. The report links its use with “Palestinian resistance” and hence condemns its use.

4. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free
The report listed “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, as a threat to Israeli freedom and right to exist. The slogan has long been used to instill solidarity and unity amongst the Palestinian population.

5. Baby Killer, Israel:
The slogan has been used by Pro-Palestinian activists to highlight the atrocities carried out by the Israeli government against civilians. Th report implies that the slogan uses extremist stance agsinst Israel, giving rise to antisemitism.

Critics raise concerns over Germany’s approach
Germany has placed support for Jews and Israel at the core of its national identity and has consistently reiterated support for Israel at international level. Nonetheless, the Pro-Palestine activists have persisted in their support for the Palestinian cause. They argue that the slogans and symbols are an attempt to highlight Israel’s atrocities not the other way around. Critics contend that the symbols referenced by the BfV have historically been used in peaceful protests to advocate for Palestinian rights. Civil society groups, activists, and legal experts have taken to social media to express outrage over the report. The report raises concerns over freedom of speech and where the boundary between state control and advocacy blurs.
