Bacha Bazi: The Sexual Exploitation of Young Boys Continues in Afghanistan Under Taliban

Bacha Bazi, the sexual exploitation of young boys, remains widespread in Afghanistan. This practice, which involves dressing boys as girls and forcing them to dance for men, often leads to systematic sexual abuse. Despite official bans, the practice persists, exposing the weaknesses in Taliban rule. Military Commanders and Political Elites Involved

Military commanders, politicians, and local elites secretly continue this tradition. Taliban supreme leaders claim to oppose it, but they fail to enforce real change. Reports indicate that Afghan security forces are also complicit in the abuse.

US Report Confirms Ongoing Exploitation

A recent report from the US State Department highlights the systematic recruitment of boys for sexual slavery. Many victims come from impoverished families. They are lured with promises of work, only to be trafficked and exploited.

The Practice Spreads Beyond Afghanistan

Bacha Bazi is not confined to Afghanistan. In Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, young boys seeking employment also fall prey to traffickers. Many are handed over to powerful men, including truck drivers and business owners.

Survivors Face Lifelong Trauma

Victims suffer severe physical and psychological scars. Many turn to drugs to cope with their trauma. Once they outgrow their youth, they are often discarded by their abusers, leaving them with no path to recovery.

Western Forces Ignored the Issue

During the US occupation, American soldiers reported hearing Afghan officers abuse boys on military bases. However, they were ordered to ignore it, as it was considered part of the local culture. This failure to intervene left thousands of victims without help.

Taliban Rule Makes the Situation Worse

Since the Taliban took control in 2021, gender segregation and restrictions on women have increased. This has fueled the continuation of Bacha Bazi, as boys become easier targets for abuse. Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada enforces strict moral laws but fails to stop these crimes.

A Legacy of Suffering

The world’s failure to stop Bacha Bazi has left a lasting impact on countless victims. The abuse continues in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, hidden in the shadows. Without serious intervention, boys in these regions will remain trapped in cycles of exploitation and suffering.
