In a significant and united stance, the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have condemned Israel for what they term “clear violations” of international law in Gaza. The joint statement was issued at the conclusion of the 44th session of the GCC on Tuesday, with the leaders expressing their deep concern over Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza.
The GCC leaders, representing the six member nations, strongly denounced Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which they argue have resulted in the forced displacement of civilians and extensive destruction of infrastructure, including residential buildings, schools, health facilities, and places of worship. According to the leaders, such actions blatantly violate both international law and international humanitarian law, and they expressed dissatisfaction with what they deemed as “blatant Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.”
During the summit, Turkish President Erdogan, a guest participant, emphasized the economic ties between Turkey and the GCC countries, revealing that there had been $23 billion worth of trade between them. However, his focus quickly shifted to the ongoing crisis in Gaza, where he accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of committing war crimes against humanity. Erdogan expressed concern that Netanyahu’s actions were pushing the entire region into danger solely for political gain.
The timing of this joint condemnation coincided with Israeli forces launching a significant assault on the main city in the southern Gaza Strip. Reports indicated that Israeli tanks entered parts of Khan Younis, marking a substantial ground assault. The leaders’ statement called for an immediate resumption of a humanitarian truce in Gaza to achieve a sustainable ceasefire and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to its intended destinations.
The GCC leaders pledged ongoing support for the Palestinian people and committed to providing assistance in rebuilding what they termed the destruction caused by the Israeli war machine in past years. They also warned of the potential expansion of the conflict to other regions in the Middle East, highlighting the dire consequences such an escalation could have on the region’s people and international peace and security.
Furthermore, the GCC leaders called on the international community to intervene and establish a ceasefire to protect civilians. They reiterated their demand for an end to the occupation of Palestine and supported the sovereignty of the Palestinian people over all the occupied territories.
In his opening remarks, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani urged the UN Security Council to compel Israel to return to the negotiating table, calling the ongoing situation a “heinous crime” that the international community should not allow to continue. He emphasized the need for an international investigation into the alleged massacres committed by Israel and condemned the targeting of civilians of all nationalities and religions.
The GCC council’s declaration at the end of the summit echoed Qatar’s Emir’s sentiments, emphasizing the urgency of halting the war in Gaza. The Qatari Foreign Minister stated that their primary goal is to stop the conflict, emphasizing ongoing mediation talks. He also expressed the unacceptability of preventing humanitarian aid from reaching the besieged strip.
As tensions persist in the region, the joint condemnation from the GCC leaders and President Erdogan signals a unified stance against Israel’s actions in Gaza, with a call for immediate international intervention to bring about peace and address the humanitarian crisis.
