US Officials Visit Pakistan for Talks on Afghan Immigrant Repatriation

In the wake of Pakistan’s recent move to repatriate a significant number of illegal Afghan immigrants, the diplomatic landscape is set to witness a significant development. Three high-profile US officials are slated to visit Pakistan, raising speculation about discussions on the issue with the Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar-led caretaker government and the country’s top military leadership.

US Officials’ Visit and Purpose:

Sources reveal that the impending visit of three top US officials is closely linked to the recent expulsion of Afghan immigrants by Pakistan. The officials are expected to engage in discussions with Pakistani leadership, focusing on the sensitive issue of Afghan refugees’ repatriation. However, the Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, has remained tight-lipped about the specific purpose of their visit.

US Delegation Details:

The US delegation includes Julieta Valls Noyes, the Assistant Secretary for Population, Refugees, and Migration, arriving on a three-day visit starting Monday. Tom West, the US Special Representative on Afghanistan, is scheduled to touch down in the capital on Thursday, followed by Elizabeth Horst, the US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, arriving on December 09.

Ongoing Consultations and Exchange of Visits:

The Foreign Office spokesperson emphasized that Pakistan and the United States maintain an ongoing dialogue on various issues, with regular exchanges of visits to advance consultations. While the specific details of the upcoming discussions remain undisclosed, the spokesperson highlighted the broader context of the visits, framing them as part of the continuous dialogue between the two nations.

Official Stance on Afghan Immigrants:

Addressing concerns, the spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, clarified that no crackdown on Afghan immigrants has been launched. This statement aims to provide context to the ongoing discussions between the US and Pakistan, signaling a nuanced approach to the issue of Afghan immigrants residing illegally within Pakistan’s borders.

As the three US officials prepare to engage with Pakistani authorities, the situation surrounding the expulsion of illegal Afghan immigrants adds a layer of complexity to the diplomatic relations between the two nations. The discussions that unfold during these high-profile visits may shed light on the shared concerns and collaborative efforts required to address the multifaceted challenges in the region, particularly regarding the issue of Afghan refugees. The outcome of these meetings could potentially shape the future trajectory of diplomatic relations and cooperation between the United States and Pakistan.
