Growing Threats to US Assets in the Middle East
In a dramatic turn of events, the USS Thomas Hudner, a guided-missile destroyer, successfully intercepted and shot down multiple attack drones launched from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. The incident highlights the escalating threats faced by US assets in the Middle East, particularly since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.
Houthi Rebels’ “Axis of Resistance” and Ongoing Attacks
Yemen’s Houthi rebels, aligning themselves with the “axis of resistance” formed by Iran’s allies, have intensified their assaults on US and allied targets. The rebels have been actively deploying drones and missiles, aiming at Israel and US forces, with a recent attempt to strike southern Israel thwarted by the Israeli defense system. The Houthi spokesperson, Yahya Saree, has boldly declared that these operations will persist until Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people ceases.
US Responds to Attacks on Multiple Fronts
The attack on the USS Thomas Hudner is just one in a series of incidents targeting US assets since the commencement of the Gaza conflict on October 7. US forces stationed in Iraq and Syria have faced more than 66 attacks, resulting in over 60 injuries. Responding to these provocations, the US conducted its first significant retaliatory strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq, specifically targeting the Kataib Hezbollah militia. The strikes, however, drew criticism from Iraq’s government, labeling them an “unacceptable violation of Iraqi sovereignty.”
