US Visa Waiver Program Sparks Outrage Among Arab Americans Over Israel’s Inclusion
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a move that has left Arab Americans and Palestinian rights advocates fuming, the Biden administration’s decision to admit Israel into the selective Visa Waiver Program (VWP) has triggered a storm of controversy. The decision, hailed as a strengthening of the bond between the two staunch allies, has come under fire for what critics perceive as the US government’s indifference to well-documented Israeli discrimination against American citizens of Arab and Palestinian descent.

Advocates Accuse US Government of Ignoring Rights Violations:

The Biden administration’s eagerness to welcome Israel into the VWP has raised concerns among activists who argue that it effectively condones Israeli actions that discriminate against American citizens. By doing so, they contend that the US is turning a blind eye to violations against its own citizens’ rights to extend perks to Israel. James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, expressed a feeling of betrayal, stating, “This was about us. It was about Arab Americans and our rights.”

Reciprocity Disputed Amid Concerns for American Citizens:

Reciprocity, a cornerstone of US travel policies, has become a point of contention in this controversy. While US officials claim that Israel met the reciprocity requirement by updating its entry policies, critics argue that Israel’s inclusion in the VWP disregards its mistreatment of American citizens and violates US laws. For example, Americans residing in Gaza still require special permits from Israeli authorities to leave the besieged territory, a requirement not imposed on citizens of other VWP countries. Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller’s acknowledgment of “different procedures” for Gaza did little to quell the rising frustration.

‘No Respect for Us’:

One of the most infuriating aspects for many Arab Americans is that the Biden administration actively lobbied for Israel’s inclusion in the VWP. Thomas Nides, Washington’s former envoy to Israel, led a campaign that publicly championed Israel’s entry. This has led to criticism that the US is bestowing political victories upon a right-wing Israeli government, particularly under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Zogby expressed his frustration, saying, “I’m insulted, and I’m angry.” The decision has also sparked concerns about the safety of US citizens in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, with muted responses from Washington to abuses against them.

Controversial Decision Raises Questions About US-Israel Relations:

The decision to admit Israel into the Visa Waiver Program not only exposes rifts within the Arab American community but also raises broader questions about the US-Israel relationship. Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib criticized the move, stating, “This decision enables further racist practices and violence towards Americans.” Tlaib emphasized the requirement that all US citizens be treated equally under the VWP and called for accountability from the United States in addressing the discrimination faced by Americans attempting to enter Israel.

As the controversy surrounding Israel’s inclusion in the VWP continues to escalate, it remains to be seen how the Biden administration will respond to the growing discontent among Arab Americans and advocates for Palestinian rights. The decision has not only strained relations within the United States but has also put a spotlight on the delicate balance between American interests and alliances in the Middle East.
