Beijing’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict is reflected in the debate surrounding claims that China had “removed Israel” from digital maps, which have remained contentious and politically delicate.
China’s historic support for Palestine
After some users noticed that several Chinese digital mapping services seemed to exclude the word “Israel” while still displaying neighbouring nations and significant cities, reports went viral. In addition, China has long maintained strong links with the Palestinian national movement and has continuously stated its support for Palestinian statehood. During the Cold War, Beijing was one of the first non-Arab nations to back the Palestinian cause and build ties with Fatah. China has consistently supported a two-state solution based on international law and pre-1967 borders, and it has formally recognised the State of Palestine.
Chinese diplomacy often frames the Palestinian issue within anti-colonial and self-determination narratives, aligning with Beijing’s broader foreign policy emphasis on sovereignty and opposition to Western dominance.
Dual approach
The map controversy gained additional attention because observers claimed that Chinese digital services had, on multiple occasions, displayed maps where Israel’s name appeared absent or less prominent than other states. Even if these instances were not officially acknowledged as deliberate policy decisions, they reinforced perceptions that China’s symbolic messaging tends to favor Palestine diplomatically.
Nevertheless, China also maintains extensive economic and technological relations with Israel, particularly in trade, infrastructure, and innovation sectors. This dual approach illustrates Beijing’s attempt to balance strategic partnerships while simultaneously presenting itself as a supporter of Palestinian political aspirations and a critic of prolonged regional occupation and conflict. This highlights China’s subtle diplomatic cunningness where it refuses to tip towards one side.
