Pakistani & Afghan Forces Target Each Other’s Positions on Torkham Border
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Gunfire and artillery shelling erupted at the Torkham border on Monday evening as Pakistani and Afghan forces targeted each other’s positions. The exchange of fire came when residents were offering Ramazan Taraweeh prayers. Artillery shells lit up the night sky, forcing many locals to flee their homes.

Buildings Damaged, Residents Take Shelter

Local sources confirmed that several buildings on the Pakistani side were damaged, including a mosque. The Pakistani military launched intense shelling from positions in Landi Kotal and nearby hilltop posts. Afghan forces responded with moderate firing at long intervals.

Many residents took shelter in railway tunnels, mosque basements, or behind vehicles and hillocks. Stranded truck drivers remained with their loaded vehicles, fearing damage to their goods. The situation left people without food during Sehri, adding to their distress.

Stranded Trucks and Financial Losses

The ongoing conflict has worsened the crisis for traders and transporters. Nearly 5,000 trucks loaded with goods remain stranded on the Pakistani side. Customs officials estimate daily losses of $1.5 million due to the border closure.

The Torkham border is the busiest trade route between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Many Afghan imports, including coal, soapstone, and dry fruits, have been diverted to Torkham due to insecurity at Kharlaachi in Kurram.

Afghan Nationals Seek Refuge in Mosques

Hundreds of Afghan nationals waiting for border reopening sought refuge in Landi Kotal mosques. A local youth organization provided them with food and warm clothing. These individuals, already suffering from the prolonged closure, now face even greater hardship due to the fresh violence.

Border Meeting Fails to Prevent Conflict

The border was abruptly shut down on February 21 after disagreements over the modification of border structures. Both sides halted all cross-border movement and refused to engage in dialogue.

On Sunday, Pakistani and Afghan officials held a flag meeting to resolve the issue. Officials expressed optimism about reopening the border on Monday. However, the sudden gunfight shattered these hopes, leaving the situation tense and uncertain.

No Clarity on Cause of Fighting

The reason behind the latest clash remains unclear. Security officials have not shared details about what triggered the violence. With no immediate resolution in sight, traders, transporters, and local residents continue to suffer the consequences.

The renewed hostilities at Torkham highlight the fragile nature of Pakistan-Afghanistan relations. Diplomatic efforts will be crucial to prevent further escalation and ensure the safe resumption of cross-border trade.
