The first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza has ended with no clear path forward for the second phase. Israeli officials are attempting to modify the terms of the agreement, putting its future in jeopardy.
Israel’s negotiation team has returned from Cairo, but no new agreements have been reached. Under the original deal, the first phase was set to last six weeks, ending on March 1. Its key provisions included the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from major population centers, an increase in humanitarian aid, and the return of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza.
Israel’s Violations Threaten the Agreement
Reports indicate that Israel has violated the conditions of the first phase at least 266 times. These violations undermine the credibility of the agreement and weaken the chances of progressing to the next stage.
The second phase of the ceasefire was left intentionally vague, with further details to be determined through ongoing negotiations. However, with Israel delaying discussions and attempting to change the deal’s terms, there is growing uncertainty about whether the ceasefire will hold.
Hamas Accuses Israel of Obstruction
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem stated that Israel is solely responsible for the lack of negotiations on the second phase. He accused Israel of using the ceasefire to secure the release of more captives while preparing to resume military operations.
Qassem made it clear that Hamas will not accept an indefinite extension of the first phase. He urged international mediators and guarantor countries to pressure Israel into respecting the original agreement.
Ongoing Violence and Civilian Casualties
Despite the ceasefire, violence has continued. The Gaza Health Ministry reported 23 fatalities in the past 48 hours. This includes two people recently killed and 21 bodies recovered. Another 23 wounded individuals have arrived at hospitals for treatment.
The humanitarian situation remains dire. Aid organizations report shortages of food, medicine, and shelter for displaced civilians. The delay in implementing the second phase of the agreement has worsened conditions for thousands of families in Gaza.
Concerns Over Forced Displacement in the West Bank
In addition to the crisis in Gaza, Israel is accused of advancing a plan to ethnically cleanse Palestinian communities in the northern West Bank. Observers warn that this could escalate tensions further and lead to new waves of violence and displacement.
Calls for Humanitarian Support
With no clear resolution in sight, humanitarian groups are urging global action. Organizations actively providing food and shelter in Gaza need urgent support.
The situation remains volatile, and the future of the ceasefire is uncertain. Without international intervention, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is expected to worsen in the coming days.
