Lawmakers in the United States are introducing new bills. These are aimed at suppressing criticism of Israel and punishing those who support Palestinian rights. These efforts have intensified since the assault on Gaza last year. With the GOP now in full control of the government, more anti-Palestinian legislation is expected. However, many of these bills had bipartisan support under the Biden administration.
Michael Arria of Mondoweiss spoke with Lara Friedman, president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace (FMEP). Friedman tracks congressional legislation and warns that these bills aim to suppress dissent and criminalize activism.
Antisemitism Awareness Act
This bill seeks to redefine antisemitism to include criticism of Israel, particularly on college campuses where pro-Palestinian activism has been increasing. It is not designed to combat actual antisemitism but rather to silence voices advocating for Palestinian rights. By using this definition, lawmakers can penalize students and activists who protest against Israeli policies, posing a serious threat to free speech and academic freedom.
Nonprofit Restrictions Bill
Aimed at removing tax-exempt status from nonprofits accused of supporting “terrorism,” this bill directly targets human rights organizations that provide aid to Palestinians. Israel frequently uses terrorism allegations to discredit Palestinian groups, and this law would make it easier to shut down NGOs working in occupied territories. The bill is a tool for silencing organizations that expose Israel’s human rights violations and support Palestinian rights.
COLUMBIA Act
Federal “antisemitism monitors” would be deployed to universities under this act, tasked with policing and suppressing student protests against Israeli war crimes. This measure grants the government direct power to surveil and punish pro-Palestinian activism on campuses. Peaceful demonstrators could be treated as criminals, making it harder for students to advocate for Palestinian rights without facing legal consequences.
Campus Crackdown Bills
Legislation is being proposed that threatens universities with the loss of federal funding if they allow pro-Palestinian activism or protests against Israeli policies. These measures create an environment where students fighting for justice are treated as a threat, while pro-Israel groups continue to operate freely. The goal is to suppress the next generation of activists and create a climate of fear around speaking out for Palestinian rights.
Israel Anti-Boycott Act
This bill criminalizes Americans who comply with European Union and United Nations boycotts of illegal Israeli settlements. It imposes massive fines or even prison time for individuals or businesses that refuse to engage with these settlements. By making it illegal to boycott Israeli apartheid, the law effectively forces compliance with Israel’s occupation policies, undermining the fundamental right to protest through economic means.
PA & ICC Sanctions Bill
This bill expands Trump-era policies targeting the ICC. It punishes the Palestinian Authority for cooperating with war crimes investigations. It aims to prevent Palestinians from seeking justice through international courts. This reinforces Israeli impunity and shields it from accountability. Any attempt to hold Israel responsible faces severe financial and diplomatic consequences.
