Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has criticized a recent proposal by former US President Donald Trump regarding the relocation of Palestinians. Speaking to Sky News in Tehran, Araghchi suggested relocating Israelis to Greenland instead of displacing Palestinians from Gaza.
During the interview, Araghchi mocked Trump’s suggestion that Palestinians from Gaza could be relocated to neighboring countries like Jordan or Egypt. He said, “Instead of Palestinians, try to expel Israelis, take them to Greenland so they can kill two birds with one stone.”
Araghchi Warns Against Attacks on Iran’s Nuclear Sites
The foreign minister also issued a warning to Israel over potential attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities. He stated that any attack would prompt an immediate and decisive response from Iran. “Such an attack would turn the entire region into a very bad disaster,” he said.
Araghchi’s remarks come amid heightened tensions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently reported that Iran has amassed 200 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity, just shy of weapons-grade material.
The Nuclear Deal and Its Aftermath
The strained relations stem from the US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Trump’s 2018 decision to exit the agreement led Iran to accelerate its uranium enrichment efforts.
Araghchi acknowledged the possibility of resuming negotiations with the US but emphasized the need for guarantees. He expressed skepticism over future talks, citing the 2018 withdrawal as a breach of trust.
Iran’s Regional Influence
Araghchi highlighted Iran’s continued support for regional groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. He acknowledged that these organizations have faced setbacks but remain resilient. “This is an idea, a cause, and an ideal that will always exist,” he stated.
US and Global Reactions
Trump, speaking last week, expressed his preference for a diplomatic resolution regarding Iran’s nuclear status. However, no concrete measures have been announced to address the growing tensions.
Iran maintains that its nuclear facilities serve peaceful purposes. The country has consistently rejected allegations of pursuing nuclear weapons, despite evidence presented by global watchdogs.
Polarizing Remarks
Araghchi’s comments about relocating Israelis to Greenland have sparked debates on social media. Critics argue that such statements do little to de-escalate regional tensions. Supporters, however, see them as a pushback against Trump’s controversial Middle East policies.
As diplomatic efforts remain stalled, the region continues to face uncertainty. Observers stress the need for constructive dialogue to prevent further escalation.
