On Thursday 16th January, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer solidified their nations’ alliance. Starmer visited Kyiv for the first time since assuming office last year. The visit marked the signing of a groundbreaking “100 Year Partnership” agreement between Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
Zelenskyy hailed the day as historic, emphasizing the unparalleled closeness between the two nations. “We have reached a new level. This is more than a strategic partnership,” he stated at a joint press conference.
Strengthening Defense and Security
The agreement includes a provision of $3.6 billion in annual military assistance to Ukraine from the UK. Zelenskyy reiterated that this support would continue “as long as it is needed.” An additional $3 billion is expected from frozen Russian assets.
The deal aims to bolster defense ties and address long-term threats, including maritime security challenges. The partnership reflects Kyiv’s “peace through strength” approach, as Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of maintaining Ukraine’s military capacity.
“We will not reduce the size of our military,” Zelenskyy declared. He also pointed to the critical role of international allies in Ukraine’s resilience against Russian aggression.
War Costs and Economic Burden
Zelenskyy revealed that the ongoing war has cost Ukraine approximately $100 billion over the past year. Of this amount, $40 billion came from Ukraine’s own budget. The US contributed $35 billion, while Europe provided $25 billion.
He highlighted the collective financial contributions and stressed Ukraine’s significant role in this union. “These numbers show our strength and commitment. Ukraine contributes people, resources, and resilience,” he said.
Security Guarantees and Peacekeeping Efforts
The Ukrainian president also discussed potential security guarantees. He stated that any peacekeeping deployment must include the United States. However, he acknowledged that substantive discussions with the new US administration are yet to take place.
“We need clarity on the security structure we aim to establish,” Zelenskyy noted. He indicated that future negotiations with Washington would shape these guarantees.
Keir Starmer Reaffirms Support
Prime Minister Starmer expressed unwavering support for Ukraine. “We are with you not just today or tomorrow but for 100 years,” he said. Starmer emphasized the UK’s long-term commitment to helping Ukraine achieve freedom and prosperity after the war.
Broad Scope of Cooperation
Beyond defense, the agreement expands cooperation in trade, energy, and climate change. It prioritizes clean energy transitions, economic development, and addressing global challenges. These initiatives aim to strengthen both nations’ resilience in the face of evolving threats.
The “100 Year Partnership” symbolizes a new chapter in Ukraine-UK relations. As Kyiv faces mounting challenges in its fight against Russian aggression, London’s steadfast support underscores the enduring strength of their alliance. The partnership promises not only military aid but also economic growth and a shared vision for the future.
