Syria’s caretaker PM says defense ministry will be restructured via ‘revolutionary factions’ in the coming period
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a significant move signaling Syria’s shift towards a unified military structure, Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir has announced plans to restructure the Defense Ministry by integrating various revolutionary factions. This initiative aims to consolidate military efforts under a central command, fostering national unity and stability in the post-Assad era.

Integration of Revolutionary Factions

The restructuring plan involves disbanding the military wings of rebel groups and forming an official national army under the Defense Ministry’s auspices. Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), emphasized the necessity of adopting a state-oriented mentality and establishing a social contract to ensure social justice. This approach is expected to facilitate the transition from fragmented armed groups to a cohesive national military force.

International Engagement and Legitimacy

The international community has begun to engage with Syria’s new leadership. France, for instance, raised its flag at its Damascus embassy for the first time in 12 years, indicating a willingness to establish diplomatic relations with the new authorities. However, challenges remain, as HTS is still designated as a terrorist organization by Western nations. The group’s efforts to gain legitimacy are crucial for Syria’s reintegration into the global community.

Economic and Social Challenges

Syria’s new government faces significant economic hurdles, including a devalued currency and depleted foreign reserves. In response, there are plans to double civil servant salaries and integrate armed factions into the Defense Ministry to streamline military expenditures. Additionally, the government is urging Syrian refugees to return home and contribute to the nation’s rebuilding efforts, assuring them of religious freedom and security under the new regime.

Security Measures and Future Outlook

To ensure national security, the new administration plans to cease forced conscription and disarm the general populace, ensuring that only the official army remains armed. This measure aims to reduce internal conflicts and promote a sense of safety among citizens. The formation of a unified national army is expected to play a pivotal role in stabilizing Syria and facilitating its recovery from years of civil war.

The restructuring of Syria’s Defense Ministry marks a critical step towards national unity and stability. By integrating revolutionary factions into a centralized military framework, the new government seeks to overcome past divisions and build a cohesive state apparatus. The success of this initiative will depend on effective implementation and the continued engagement of the international community in supporting Syria’s transition.
