‘How does UN recognition harm peace?’, asks Palestinian UN rep
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In the latest chapter of the enduring Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the United States wielded its veto power at the UN Security Council (UNSC), thwarting a resolution advocating full UN membership for the State of Palestine. This move, expected due to America’s close alliance with Israel, elicited varied responses globally.

The resolution, introduced by Algeria, garnered 12 affirmative votes, with the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstaining. This diplomatic showdown amplifies tensions and raises pertinent questions regarding the role of international bodies in resolving protracted conflicts.

1.Palestinian Authority Reacts

The Palestinian Authority, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, condemned the US veto as “blatant aggression,” asserting it exacerbates regional instability. Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour affirmed their unwavering resolve, emphasizing that Palestine’s statehood is inevitable, despite setbacks.

2.Hamas Condemns US Bias

The militant group Hamas denounced the US’s veto as a manifestation of bias favoring Israel. Their statement urged global solidarity to uphold Palestinian self-determination, stressing relentless resistance until achieving an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

3.Egypt Expresses Regret

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep regret over the UNSC’s failure to pass the resolution. They reiterated Palestine’s inherent right to full UN membership, deeming it crucial for advancing a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.

4.Israel Applauds US Support

Conversely, Israel’s Foreign Minister praised the US veto, labeling the resolution as “shameful.” Israel contends that Hamas-led attacks necessitate security measures, highlighting the ongoing violence plaguing the region.

5. US Stance and Criticism

The US, through Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood, reiterated its commitment to Palestinian statehood within a comprehensive peace framework. However, concerns persist regarding Palestine’s readiness for statehood, citing governance reforms and the influence of Hamas.

6.Russian Critique

Russia’s UN Ambassador criticized the US for prioritizing Israeli interests over Palestinian rights. The veto, in their view, perpetuates injustice and undermines Palestinians’ aspirations for statehood, exacerbating tensions in the region.

7. Global Regret

Several nations, including Saudi Arabia and Norway, expressed regret over the UNSC’s deadlock, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the Palestinian issue to restore regional stability.

The US’s veto at the UNSC reflects entrenched geopolitical alliances, underscoring the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As diplomatic avenues falter, the plight of Palestinians persists, emphasizing the pressing need for concerted international efforts to foster lasting peace and justice in the region.
