In the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike that destroyed Iran’s consulate in Damascus, tensions between the two nations have escalated, prompting a stern warning from the United States to Iran against retaliatory actions.
The attack, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, including two Iranian generals and a member of Hezbollah, sparking outrage from Tehran. Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Zahra Ershadi, condemned the strike during a Security Council meeting, emphasizing Iran’s right to deliver a decisive response to what they deemed a reprehensible act by Israel.
Ershadi accused Israel of perpetuating the conflict in Gaza and evading accountability for its actions, further escalating tensions in the region. She urged the Security Council to condemn the attack, emphasizing the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises.
In response, US Ambassador Robert Wood reiterated that Washington had no involvement in the strike and urged Iran to avoid escalating tensions further. He emphasized the need for Iran and its proxy groups to refrain from exacerbating the longstanding proxy war against Israel and other actors in the region.
Wood expressed concern over the potential for further attacks on US personnel and facilities, warning that US authorities would defend their personnel against any threats. He also lamented the recent Israeli airstrike on a World Central Kitchen aid convoy, calling on Israel to do more to protect humanitarian personnel and facilities in Gaza.
The Security Council meeting saw strong condemnation from other member states, with Russia, Slovenia, and China among those expressing concern over the escalating violence and calling for restraint. Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, condemned Israel’s aggressive actions and urged West Jerusalem to cease provocative acts of force in Syria and neighboring countries.
Slovenia’s Permanent Representative, Samuel Zbogar, echoed calls for restraint, emphasizing the need to prioritize the interests of the people in the region and avoid further escalation of the conflict.
China’s Deputy Ambassador, Geng Shuang, condemned the attack on Iran’s consulate as “extremely vicious” and stressed the inviolability of diplomatic institutions. He called for an immediate halt to the breaches of international law and the norms of international relations, emphasizing the need to end the ongoing tragedy in the region.
As tensions continue to simmer in the Middle East, the international community remains vigilant, urging all parties to exercise restraint and work towards de-escalating the situation to prevent further violence and instability in the region.
