Russia-Ukraine War: Key Events on Day 722
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine enters its 722nd day, significant developments continue to unfold, shaping the course of the ongoing war. From military engagements and diplomatic efforts to humanitarian concerns, each day brings new challenges and opportunities for both sides. Here are the main events that took place on February 15, 2024.

Fighting:

Attack on Russian Landing Warship: Ukraine reported critically damaging the Caesar Kunikov, a Russian landing warship, off occupied Crimea in a drone attack. This incident dealt a significant blow to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, with no official comment from Russian authorities as of yet.

Escalation in Avdiivka: Newly-appointed Ukrainian armed forces chief Oleksandr Syrskyii visited troops in Avdiivka, describing the situation as “extremely complex and stressful.” Ukrainian forces face a numerical disadvantage against Russian troops in this key flashpoint on the eastern front line.

Civilian Casualties: At least three people, including a child, were killed in Russian missile attacks on the town of Selydove in eastern Donetsk region. Additionally, a Russian S-300 missile struck an apartment block in a village in the northeastern Kharkiv region, resulting in two deaths and four injuries.

Drone Attacks: A Ukrainian drone attack targeted Russia’s Belgorod and Voronezh regions, as well as the Black Sea. Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported the destruction of nine drones, highlighting ongoing aerial engagements between the two sides.

Politics and Diplomacy:

U.S. Aid Package: President Joe Biden and top officials urged Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson to vote on a $61 billion assistance package for Ukraine. The bill, which includes aid for Israel and Taiwan, faces opposition from former President Donald Trump.

NATO Support: NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called on US lawmakers to pass the aid bill, emphasizing its significance for collective security. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron echoed similar sentiments, urging Congress to approve the package.

Russian Legislation: President Vladimir Putin signed a law permitting the confiscation of assets from individuals convicted of disseminating false information about the military. This move reflects Russia’s efforts to curb dissent and control the narrative surrounding the conflict.

International Support: The Netherlands announced its participation in a military coalition, along with the UK, to supply Ukraine with advanced drone technology. Canada pledged $44 million in aid to support Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.

Day 722 of the Russia-Ukraine war witnessed a mix of military engagements, diplomatic maneuvers, and international support efforts. As the conflict persists, each development underscores the complex dynamics and enduring challenges faced by both sides. The quest for peace and stability in the region remains elusive, with the situation on the ground continuing to evolve rapidly.
