As the curtain falls on 2023, the diplomatic relationship between China and the United States reaches a significant milestone – its 45th anniversary. In a symbolic exchange of congratulatory messages, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of implementing common understandings and fostering a stable, healthy, and sustainable development of their relations.
Reflecting on the historic summit held in San Francisco last November, President Xi outlined five pillars for China-U.S. relations: developing the right perception, effectively managing disagreements, advancing mutually beneficial cooperation, shouldering responsibilities as major countries, and promoting people-to-people exchanges.
Economic Ballast:
Undoubtedly, the economic and trade cooperation between China and the U.S. stands as the ballast of their relationship. Over the past 45 years, despite ups and downs, bilateral trade has surged from $2.5 billion in 1979 to a substantial $690.6 billion in 2022. Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng highlighted the 45th anniversary as a new starting point, emphasizing new opportunities for business cooperation.
Driving Force: People-to-People Exchanges:
President Xi has entrusted the future of China-U.S. ties to the two peoples, emphasizing that the foundation of their relations lies in the people. With a focus on people-to-people exchanges, Xi has maintained interactions with U.S. businessmen, scholars, and politicians. Notably, he announced China’s readiness to invite 50,000 young Americans to China on exchange and study programs in the next five years, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration.
Last year witnessed a surge in people-to-people interactions, from resumed group tours to the U.S. to cultural events like a 50th-anniversary concert celebrating the Philadelphia Orchestra’s historic visit to China in 1973.
Red Line: The Taiwan Question:
A crucial red line in China-U.S. relations is the Taiwan question, as emphasized by President Xi during their meetings. Xi underscored that the Taiwan question remains the most important and sensitive issue, urging the U.S. to honor its commitment of not supporting “Taiwan independence,” cease arming Taiwan, and support China’s peaceful reunification.
Experts believe that the Taiwan question is the real test for the development of China-U.S. relations. Gao Fei, vice president at China Foreign Affairs University, stated that mishandling this issue could harm relations more than any other, including economic and trade ties.
As Taiwan prepares for a leadership election, the sensitivity of the period ahead requires both nations to appreciate each other’s principles and red lines, refraining from provocative actions.
As China and the U.S. celebrate 45 years of diplomatic ties, the achievements and challenges in economic cooperation, people-to-people exchanges, and the delicate Taiwan question highlight the need for continuous dialogue and strategic understanding to ensure a stable and prosperous future for both nations
