The Ongoing Conflict in Gaza: Biden’s Stance and UN Resolution
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza has escalated, with significant implications for regional stability and humanitarian concerns. The United States, under President Joe Biden, has played a pivotal role in addressing the crisis. In a recent phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Biden clarified the U.S. stance on a ceasefire. This article delves into the latest developments, the Biden administration’s position, and the recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution.

Biden’s Phone Call with Netanyahu:

President Biden, addressing reporters, stated that during his recent conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu, he did not explicitly request a ceasefire. The White House later released a statement highlighting the discussions between the two leaders. The call focused on Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, emphasizing its objectives and phasing. Biden underscored the critical need to protect the civilian population, support humanitarian aid operations, and allow civilians to move safely away from conflict zones. The leaders also discussed the importance of securing the release of all remaining hostages.

The UNSC Resolution:

In the backdrop of the escalating conflict, the UN Security Council passed a resolution aimed at scaling up aid for Gaza. However, the resolution fell short of explicitly calling for a ceasefire or a pause in the weeks-long fighting. The document demanded “immediate, safe, and unhindered” deliveries of life-saving aid to Gaza “at scale.” The resolution, subject to negotiations among UNSC members, faced challenges in wording, with certain provisions being toned down, largely due to U.S. insistence.

U.S. Abstention and Impact:

The United States, along with Russia, abstained from voting on the resolution, a move that raised eyebrows and drew criticism. Aid groups and experts expressed concerns that the watered-down resolution might have minimal impact on the ground, especially in light of the ongoing Israeli bombardment of Gaza. The resolution’s demand for the creation of a UN monitoring mechanism for aid faced opposition from the U.S., ensuring that Israel continues to inspect deliveries.

Netanyahu’s Response:

Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed appreciation for the U.S. stance at the UN, making it clear that Israel would persist in its military campaign until all its goals were achieved. The Israeli government maintains that its actions are necessary for national security and to neutralize threats posed by Hamas and other militant groups.

Humanitarian Crisis and UNRWA’s Statement:

The situation in Gaza has been described by the UN as “beyond catastrophic.” The death toll continues to rise, primarily affecting women and children, with over 200 casualties reported in the past 24 hours. UNRWA, the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees, stated that meaningful aid delivery is hindered as long as the Israeli bombardment persists. The agency emphasized the dire survival situation for the 2.2 million people in Gaza, urging an immediate end to the violence.

Conclusion:

The Israel-Hamas conflict remains a complex and deeply rooted issue, with international actors, including the United States, playing a crucial role in shaping its trajectory. The recent UNSC resolution reflects the challenges of navigating diplomatic waters amid heightened tensions. As the situation evolves, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes the well-being of civilians and sets the stage for lasting peace in the region.
