US and UK Unleash Third Round of Sanctions Targeting Hamas Financing
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The United States and the United Kingdom have announced a third round of sanctions targeting the financial underpinnings of Palestinian armed groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). Coordinated by the US Treasury Department in collaboration with the UK, these sanctions aim to cripple the financial infrastructure of the groups, marking a decisive effort to sever their ties to external funding sources.

Unyielding Response to Terrorism

In a stern statement released on Tuesday, the US Treasury Department declared the imposition of sanctions on Hamas, specifically honing in on the group’s leadership and the mechanisms facilitating Iranian support. Janet Yellen, the US Treasury Secretary, emphasized the broader impact of Hamas’s actions, asserting that terrorism is not an isolated phenomenon. The move underscores a resolute commitment to curbing the group’s ability to finance and execute heinous acts, representing a joint effort with global partners to combat the menace.

UK Joins the Fray

Simultaneously, the United Kingdom announced its contribution to the sanctions, targeting four senior Hamas leaders and two financiers. The focus of the sanctions includes the political leader in Gaza and the commander of the group’s military arm. The Foreign Office underscored the gravity of the situation, aligning the sanctions with a response to the group’s deadly assault on southern Israel, which claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 people, predominantly civilians, according to Israeli authorities.

Impact on Gaza and Ongoing Conflict

The fresh wave of sanctions comes amidst the backdrop of escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas. Israel, vowing to eliminate the group, has undertaken a comprehensive offensive, including ground operations and air strikes, resulting in severe humanitarian challenges for the more than 2.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian authorities report a staggering toll of over 11,200 casualties, including more than 4,600 children. The sanctions, while targeting leadership and funding channels, raise questions about their potential ramifications on the already dire situation in Gaza.

Global Commitment to Counterterrorism:

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken affirmed the nation’s commitment to collaborate with other countries in disrupting terrorist financing channels. The sanctions not only aim to penalize individuals directly involved but also send a broader message of global solidarity against terrorism. By targeting Hamas and its affiliated entities, the US and the UK underscore the importance of international cooperation in combating threats that transcend borders.
