Unprecedented Influx Raises Alarms
In an unexpected turn of events, Finland has witnessed a dramatic surge in asylum seekers arriving at its border with Russia. The Finnish Border Guard reported a staggering increase this week, with around 60 individuals seeking asylum since early Monday. This sudden spike contrasts sharply with the 91 people who arrived without proper documentation between August 1 and November 12. Finnish authorities are pointing fingers at Russia, accusing its neighbor of orchestrating the influx, and are determined to take action in response.
Change in Russia’s Border Policy Raises Eyebrows
Interior Minister Mari Rantanen expressed concern over the substantial rise in border crossings, linking it to what the government suspects is a shift in Russia’s border policy and enforcement. For years, Finnish and Russian authorities collaborated to prevent undocumented individuals from entering either country. However, a recent change in Russia’s approach has allowed unauthorized travelers access to the border zone, where they can then request asylum in Finland. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo went further, claiming that the asylum seekers were not merely arriving independently but were actively “helped and escorted” by Russian border guards.
Finland Cries “Hybrid Warfare”
Finnish Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen raised eyebrows by asserting that Russia’s actions could be categorized as a form of “hybrid warfare.” He accused Russia of deliberately directing migrants towards the border zone as a strategic move. Hakkanen emphasized that this situation is not isolated, drawing parallels with similar allegations made by Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland against Russia’s ally Belarus in recent years. As Finland contends with this unexpected surge, Hakkanen has pledged to inform NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and the European Union about the unfolding situation.
