Spanish PM Advocates EU Recognition of Palestinian State to End Conflict
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called for the European Union (EU) to recognize a Palestinian state as a means to bring an end to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a recent interview, Sanchez emphasized the importance of finding a political solution to the crisis and asserted that recognizing the Palestinian state would not only be a moral imperative but also serve geopolitical objectives by stabilizing the region.

Key Points:

Political Solution for the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict:

Sanchez advocates for a political solution to the conflict, highlighting the need for the international community, particularly the EU, to play a significant role.
Recognition of Palestinian State:

The Spanish Prime Minister argues that recognizing the Palestinian state is a crucial step towards resolving the conflict. This move aligns with his foreign policy priority to work towards gaining EU recognition.

Stabilizing the Region:

Sanchez sees the recognition of a Palestinian state as not only a moral imperative but also as a geopolitical strategy to stabilize the region. Acknowledging the statehood of Palestine could contribute to lasting peace in the Middle East.

Europe’s Interest in Addressing the Crisis:

According to Sanchez, addressing the Israeli-Palestinian crisis is in Europe’s interest, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to bring about a political resolution.

Potential Unilateral Recognition:

In the absence of a consensus among EU member states, Sanchez does not rule out the possibility of Spain unilaterally recognizing a Palestinian state, a move that would make Spain a pioneer within the EU.

Parliamentary Support for Recognition:

Spain’s parliament had previously voted in favor of a non-binding resolution in 2014, calling for the recognition of Palestine as a state. However, there has been no follow-up since then.
Changing Dynamics and International Law:

Sanchez notes that the situation has changed, pointing out the systematic occupation of Palestinian territory by Israel. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing international law in dealing with the conflict.

Diplomatic Tensions with Israel:

Israel recently summoned Spain’s ambassador over Sanchez’s criticisms of the Israeli offensive on Gaza. Sanchez defends Spain’s position, asserting the need for friendly nations to convey the truth while condemning acts of violence from both sides.

Pedro Sanchez’s call for the EU to recognize a Palestinian state reflects Spain’s commitment to finding a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The potential recognition, whether through collective EU agreement or unilateral action by Spain, could influence the diplomatic landscape and contribute to efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in the region.
