Pakistan is set to launch trial operations of its first international freight train service to Russia on March 15, 2025. This initiative will boost regional trade and improve connectivity with Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
The Pakistan Railway Freight Transportation Company (PRFTC), a subsidiary of Pakistan Railways, has reached out to the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) for containerized cargo commitments. The company aims to ensure a smooth trial run and efficient logistics for this new trade corridor.
Strategic Trade Route and Key Entry Points
The freight service will operate from Qasim International Container Terminal and Pakistan International Container Terminal. PRFTC has offered container capacities of 22 tonnes (T.E.U) and 44 tonnes (F.E.U). The company has urged FPCCI to coordinate with stakeholders and confirm available cargo for export.
Officials emphasized that this rail link represents a major step in strengthening trade infrastructure. Taftan station in Pakistan will serve as the primary entry point for goods traveling along this corridor. Authorities are finalizing arrangements for the deployment of customs officials at Taftan to facilitate seamless operations.
Economic Impact and Trade Opportunities
The new freight train will significantly enhance trade in the region. Russia will gain a direct route to export oil, natural gas, steel, and industrial goods to Pakistan. Meanwhile, Pakistani exporters will benefit from improved access to markets in Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Key exports will include textiles, food products, and agricultural goods such as rice, wheat, and cotton.
This project will establish a cost-effective and efficient trade route between South Asia and Central Asia. Businesses in Pakistan and Russia will experience reduced shipping costs and faster delivery times compared to traditional trade routes.
Pakistan-Russia Rail Cooperation
Pakistan and Russia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on rail cooperation during the 27th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in June 2024. This agreement laid the foundation for the freight train service and strengthened bilateral trade ties. The new service aligns with Pakistan’s broader strategy to enhance regional trade and logistics infrastructure.
Future Prospects and Regional Integration
Officials expect the freight train to become a permanent trade route after successful trials. The initiative will not only improve Pakistan’s trade volume but also strengthen economic ties between South Asia and Eurasia. Enhanced rail connectivity will encourage more investments in logistics, warehousing, and supply chain solutions across the region.
The launch of this freight train marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to expand its trade network. Business leaders and policymakers view this as a game-changer for economic growth and regional integration. The successful execution of this project could pave the way for similar trade routes in the future, further cementing Pakistan’s role as a regional trade hub.
