Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on a key diplomatic visit to Tehran, reaffirmed Pakistan’s full support for Iran’s right to a peaceful nuclear programme. In high-level meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Pakistani premier emphasized Islamabad’s commitment to enhancing cooperation on shared priorities, including regional security, economic ties, and strategic coordination.
Shehbaz arrived in Tehran as part of a broader regional tour. Accompanied by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and top ministers, the Pakistani delegation held wide-ranging discussions aimed at boosting bilateral relations.
Support for Peaceful Nuclear Programme
During a joint media briefing with President Pezeshkian at Sa’dabad Palace, Prime Minister Shehbaz explicitly supported Iran’s right to pursue a civilian nuclear programme. “Pakistan fully supports Iran’s peaceful nuclear ambitions under international regulations,” he stated, adding that Pakistan stands with Iran on issues of sovereignty and regional stability.
Gratitude for Iran’s Diplomatic Support
The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for Iran’s backing during Pakistan’s recent tensions with India. He also reiterated Pakistan’s willingness to engage in dialogue with India on key issues, including Kashmir, water disputes, and counter-terrorism—provided there is mutual sincerity.
Strengthening Economic and Security Cooperation
Both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, and border security. “We’ve agreed to transform our ties into a robust economic partnership,” Shehbaz said, highlighting shared interests in securing borders and countering terrorism.
President Pezeshkian welcomed the renewed commitment, stating that cooperation is essential to safeguard both countries from criminal and terrorist threats along the shared border.
$10 Billion Trade Target
Speaking to Iranian media ahead of the visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz revealed that bilateral trade has reached $3 billion and is expected to grow to $10 billion within the next few years. Discussions on a potential Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are underway to accelerate economic engagement, particularly between Pakistan’s Balochistan and Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan provinces.
Meeting with Supreme Leader
In a separate meeting, Shehbaz Sharif briefed Supreme Leader Khamenei on India’s recent actions and Pakistan’s response. The Supreme Leader praised Shehbaz’s diplomatic vision and welcomed Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen regional stability and bilateral ties.
Shared Stance on Palestine
The two leaders also discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. Both countries condemned Israeli military actions and reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian cause. Shehbaz called on the international community to push for a permanent ceasefire and justice for Palestinian civilians.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Tehran has reaffirmed Pakistan’s strategic alignment with Iran on key geopolitical and economic issues. From endorsing Iran’s peaceful nuclear aspirations to expanding trade and security cooperation, both nations are working to elevate their partnership to a new level amid growing regional challenges.
