Iran and Pakistan diplomatic ties after recent air strikes have taken a positive turn. Recalled ambassadors will return on January 26, as stated in a joint Monday announcement. Iranian Foreign Minister Amirab dollahian plans to visit his Pakistani counterpart three days later.
The move indicates efforts to rebuild ties after tit-for-tat missile attacks strained relations last week. The border clashes led to a nosedive in relations and a spike in tensions between the two nations.
Mutual Strikes:
Recent cross-border strikes, the most significant in years, targeted “terrorist” groups along the Iran-Pakistan border.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard hit Jaish al-Adl in Panjgur, Balochistan, while Pakistan retaliated against Baloch separatists in Sistan-Baluchestan, Iran.
The strikes occurred in restive, mineral-rich, and underdeveloped regions on both sides of the border.
Deterioration in diplomatic relations
Cross-border attacks caused a rapid decline in diplomatic relations between Islamabad and Tehran.
Ambassadors were withdrawn, official ties severed, and rhetoric escalated.
The incidents heightened global concern, especially with ongoing Israeli bombardment in Gaza, raising fears of a potential regional conflict.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls on both countries to exercise maximum restraint and prevent further escalation of tensions.
Death Toll in Middle East:
Violence has erupted in the Middle East since Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israel and subsequent Israeli bombardment of Gaza, resulting in over 25,000 Palestinian deaths. Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and the Red Sea have experienced regular fighting and air attacks in recent weeks.
Despite the turmoil, both countries, Pakistan and Iran, diplomatic ties improved to calm the situation and pledged to “de-escalate” for improved neighborly relations.
Following a telephone conversation between their foreign ministers, Pakistan and Iran agree to allow the return of ambassadors to their respective posts by January 26, 2024.
