G7 Summit in Puglia to Tackle Ukraine, Gaza, and African Investment
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) nations are convening for a three-day summit in Italy’s southern Puglia region. Starting Thursday, the event is hosted at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort, renowned for its medieval village style and celebrity visitors like Madonna. The G7, comprising the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan, along with the European Council and European Commission leaders, will focus on key global issues including additional aid to Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza, and investment in Africa.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, presiding over the summit, will welcome these leaders. This year, Italy has extended invitations to over ten other countries for side discussions. Among the notable invitees are UAE’s Mohamed bin Zayed, Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, though invited, will not be attending.

The summit’s timing is advantageous for Meloni, who recently led her far-right party to victory in the European Parliament elections, positioning her as a prominent figure in European politics. “I’m proud to be heading to the G7 with the strongest government of all,” Meloni remarked en route to Puglia.

Africa and the Mediterranean are central to the summit’s agenda, reflecting Italy’s national security interests. Meloni is expected to promote her Mattei Plan, which aims to make Italy a crucial energy hub between Europe and Africa. The plan is designed to foster growth in Africa and reduce migration to Europe.

Support for Ukraine is another critical topic. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will attend the summit’s first day, participating in two sessions dedicated to his country. The G7 is anticipated to announce a $50 billion loan for Ukraine, financed by profits from frozen Russian assets. This agreement aims to signal strong unity with Kyiv amidst ongoing conflict with Russia. The urgency is heightened by the possibility of a change in the White House following the upcoming US elections.
The Middle East conflict, particularly Israel’s war on Gaza, will also feature prominently. Leaders are expected to reiterate calls for Hamas to accept a ceasefire and emphasize the importance of a two-state solution for regional peace. Pope Francis will make a historic appearance at the summit, the first pontiff to be invited, for a session on artificial intelligence (AI). Additional sessions will cover migration, financial issues, and the Asia Pacific situation.

A final statement from the summit, typically issued on 15 June, will outline the G7’s future policy directions and priorities.

Key Summit Topic s

1. Support for Ukraine:
– Zelenskyy’s attendance underscores the importance of international backing for Ukraine.
– The G7’s expected announcement of a $50 billion loan from frozen Russian assets signifies a strong message of unity and support for Ukraine.

2. Middle East Conflict:
– Discussions will focus on Israel’s war on Gaza.
– Leaders will likely call for Hamas to accept a ceasefire and emphasize the two-state solution for peace.

3. Africa and Mediterranean Focus:
– Meloni’s Mattei Plan aims to establish Italy as an energy hub between Europe and Africa.
– This initiative seeks to promote African growth and reduce migration to Europe.

4. Artificial Intelligence:
– Pope Francis will lead a session on AI, marking the first pontiff’s participation in the G7.

5. Additional Topics:
– Migration, financial issues, and the Asia Pacific region will also be discussed.

The G7 summit in Puglia promises to address some of the most pressing global issues, with leaders striving to craft policies that reflect their priorities and offer a unified stance on key matters. The outcomes of this summit are anticipated to influence international relations and policy directions significantly.
