G7 Leaders Reaffirm Commitment to Syrian Political Transition and Accountability
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The G7 nations reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Syrian people in a joint statement issued Thursday, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. They emphasized a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition aligned with the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

This development comes days after anti-regime forces took control of Damascus, ending the Baath Party’s 61-year rule. Assad, who governed Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia, marking a pivotal shift in the country’s political landscape.

Commitment to Sovereignty and Unity

In their statement, the G7 leaders underscored the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, national unity, independence, and sovereignty. They pledged to back a political transition that ensures credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian governance.

“We stand ready to support a transition process that guarantees respect for the rule of law, universal human rights—including women’s rights—and the protection of all Syrians, including religious and ethnic minorities,” the statement declared.

Support for a Future Syrian Government

The G7 expressed its readiness to work with a future Syrian government emerging from this inclusive transition, provided it adheres to international standards of governance. Leaders aspiring to govern Syria were urged to demonstrate a strong commitment to human rights, the protection of state institutions, and the country’s recovery and rehabilitation.

Accountability for Atrocities

Accountability for decades of atrocities committed by the Assad regime was a key focus. The G7 pledged continued collaboration with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and other international bodies to ensure the destruction of Syria’s remaining chemical weapons stockpiles.

The statement also emphasized the need for justice for the regime’s documented crimes against civilians, signaling the international community’s intent to hold Assad and his allies accountable.

Addressing Terrorism and Refugee Crisis

Denouncing terrorism and violent extremism in all forms, the G7 reinforced its commitment to combating these threats. They also called for creating conditions that enable the safe and dignified voluntary return of Syrian refugees displaced by years of conflict.

Türkiye, which hosts over 4 million Syrian refugees—more than any other country—was highlighted for its pivotal role in supporting those affected by the civil war.

Golan Heights and Regional Stability

The G7 reiterated its support for the UN Disengagement Observer Force monitoring the Golan Heights, where tensions remain high due to Israel’s recent incursions. These actions have been widely condemned, adding complexity to the region’s stability.

A New Chapter for Syria

As Syria faces a transformative moment, the G7’s pledge to uphold its territorial and political sovereignty signals the international community’s support for a new beginning. The emphasis on justice, human rights, and inclusivity reflects a vision for a brighter, unified Syria, free from decades of oppression and conflict.
