The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) of the FDFA is wrapping up its three-month mission to support the flood-affected population in Pakistan. Although, Pakistan is slowly emerging from one of its deadliest natural disasters in history. In response to the unprecedented monsoon that had inundated several areas of Pakistan, the Pakistani government issued a request for international assistance at the end of August. As soon as possible, the SDC responded by sending professionals from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA). They came to the Swat Valley, where there were several needs and no other organisations there.
Swat Valley SDC contributed CHF 3 million to the total response to the floods this summer. In the country’s northwest, in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Swiss Development Fund (SDC) gave CHF 200,000. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) received an additional CHF 2 million as part of the global appeal. However, Specialists from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit have repaired 11 schools, 8 suspension bridges, and 16 water distribution systems, To mobilise local labour to clear roads of debris, mud, and other difficulties, they also set up cash-for-work programmes stationed in the country’s northwestern Swat Valley. All of these initiatives, which benefited over 30,000 people, were designed and carried out with the help of local communities.
