The European Union has announced that it will significantly increase its assistance to flood-affected people in Pakistan. Janez Lenari, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, announced PKR 6.7 billion (€30 million) in humanitarian aid for Pakistan during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The Commissioner is in Pakistan this week to get a firsthand look at the devastation caused by the floods and the ongoing relief efforts.
This new funding will go toward meeting the most pressing needs, such as basic shelters, safe drinking water and sanitation, food and nutrition, and medical services.
The European Union-funded actions will ensure that women, children, and other vulnerable people are protected from further harm and that children have access to education as soon as possible.
People will be able to cover their basic needs and rebuild their homes and livelihoods with cash assistance.
Given the magnitude of the crisis, the psychological impact on those affected will also be considered.
