Trump’s 24 Hours Call: Very Dangerous
Trumps Suggestion:

Zelensky, the Ukrainian leader, publicly voices concern over Trump’s claim. Trump suggests he could end the Russia-Ukraine war within a day if he returns to the White House. Zelensky expresses unequivocal worry about Trump’s statement.

Republican frontrunner’s boast as “very dangerous”

Ukrainian president speaks to Britain’s Channel Four News about Trump’s boast. Zelensky finds Trump’s statement “very dangerous.” The concern stems from Trump not outlining his post-war scenario. The interview aired on Friday.

Electioneering

Zelensky acknowledges Trump’s claim might be electioneering or a “political message.” He expresses concern about Trump making unilateral decisions not beneficial for Ukraine. Zelensky is stressed by the idea of Trump pushing decisions regardless of their impact on Ukraine and its people.

War settled in one day,

Trump’s tendency to make bold foreign policy statements reappeared in May last year. In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, he claimed, “If I’m president, I will have that war settled in one day, 24 hours.”

Weakness and Strengths:

When asked how, Trump suggests meeting both Zelensky and Putin. Trump mentions that both leaders have weaknesses and strengths. He claims that he would settle and end the war within 24 hours.

Split between Democrats and Republicans:

Zelensky avoids criticizing Trump, aiming to navigate the split between Democrats and Trump-supporting Republicans.

In Davos, he responds rhetorically, questioning how Trump would react if Putin threatened NATO after a hypothetical withdrawal of US support.

Zelensky refrains from leaning heavily on the political divide affecting US funding for Kyiv.

Many believe that Putin would welcome a Trump victory in November, potentially enabling him to maintain territorial gains in Ukraine.

 Conditions of Peace Deal:

Zelensky maintains that a peace deal must involve the removal of all Russian forces from lands captured since 2014, including Crimea.

The ability of Ukraine to negotiate this outcome is weakened, at least in the short term.

The failure of the summer counteroffensive has contributed to this weakened negotiating position.

Nothing about Ukraine, without Ukraine

The Biden administration and NATO emphasize that Russia cannot coerce Ukraine into any agreement. They sum up the principle as “Nothing about Ukraine, without Ukraine.”

In a Channel Four News interview, Zelensky invites Trump to Ukraine without hesitation.

Zelensky addresses Trump directly, urging him to visit Kyiv and potentially stop the war within 24 hours.

Zelensky expresses curiosity about any real ideas Trump may have, suggesting they could be shared during a visit.
