In a candid statement, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, emphasized the significant threat of losing the war with Russia if the U.S. Congress delays crucial assistance for Kyiv. The uncertainty surrounding the future of vital aid packages from the U.S. and European Union has heightened concerns as the conflict with Russia intensifies.
Yermak expressed the urgent need for assistance, stating that the postponement of aid “gives the big risk that we can be in the same position to which we’re located now.” He underlined the critical nature of the situation, stressing that delayed aid could jeopardize Ukraine’s ability to continue its fight against Russia, increasing the risk of losing the ongoing war.
The Biden administration had requested nearly $106 billion from Congress in October to support Ukraine’s ambitious plans, among other initiatives. However, the package was rejected by House Republicans. White House officials acknowledged that time and financial resources were running out to assist Ukraine effectively.
Yermak specifically highlighted the threat posed by the absence of direct budgetary support. With a projected $43 billion budget deficit for the next year, he emphasized the difficulty of sustaining the country without adequate financial assistance. Yermak urged Congress to swiftly approve the aid package, emphasizing its critical importance for Ukraine’s survival in the midst of an ongoing war.
During his visit to Washington, Yermak outlined Ukraine’s comprehensive plan for the upcoming year, encompassing military operations, diplomatic activities, and cooperation in communications and information. He pledged to engage with lawmakers and administration officials to underscore the urgency of approving the aid package, crucial for Ukraine’s ability to navigate the complex challenges posed by the conflict with Russia.
