US Jewish Writer Renounces Israeli Citizenship in Protest of Genocide in Gaza for dismantling the oppressive systems.

A Bold Act of Protest
Avi Steinberg, a US-based Jewish writer, has taken a powerful stand against Israeli policies in Gaza by renouncing his Israeli citizenship. Writing for Truthout, Steinberg described his decision as a protest against what he called Israel’s “genocidal campaign to erase Palestine’s Indigenous people.” He criticized the state’s reliance on “ethnically determined supremacist laws” and its pursuit of a colonial agenda aimed at the elimination of Palestine. Born in occupied Jerusalem and raised under the Israeli “Law of Return,” Steinberg now resides in Boston, USA, where he advocates for dismantling the oppressive systems he once lived under.

Condemnation of Ethnic Supremacy
Steinberg’s critique of Israel’s policies is rooted in its treatment of identity and citizenship as tools of exclusion and control. He likened the physical wall separating Palestinians from their homeland to the bureaucratic barriers imposed by identity papers, calling for the removal of both. Steinberg urged others to reject the narratives that legitimize oppression, emphasizing the moral imperative to challenge systems that perpetuate injustice. His call to action extended to his Israeli peers, encouraging them to renounce their citizenship or take meaningful steps to dismantle colonial structures.

A History of Displacement and Oppression
The “Law of Return,” passed by the Knesset in 1950, allows Jews to settle in Israel and obtain immediate citizenship, a policy Steinberg’s family benefited from before moving to the US. This law has been a cornerstone of Israel’s demographic strategy, yet critics argue it institutionalizes discrimination against Palestinians. Steinberg’s denunciation of this law reflects growing discontent among some Jewish individuals who see it as a tool for perpetuating inequality and erasing Palestinian rights.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Steinberg’s protest coincides with the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Since October 2023, Israel’s military operations have resulted in approximately 154,000 Palestinian casualties, with most victims being women and children. Over 11,000 people remain missing amid widespread destruction and starvation. The scale of the devastation has drawn international condemnation, yet Israel continues its actions, undeterred by arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes.

A Call for Global Accountability
Steinberg’s renunciation of Israeli citizenship amplifies calls for global accountability and action against injustices in Gaza. By speaking out, he joins a growing number of voices urging the international community to confront Israel’s policies and their devastating human impact. His protest challenges individuals and nations alike to take a stand against systems of oppression and work toward a future where justice and human rights are upheld for all. US Jewish Writer Renounces Israeli Citizenship poignantly stated, “Our job must be to disrupt the narratives that make these structures of oppression and injustice appear legitimate or inevitable.”
