The United States and Australia have deepened their military cooperation in response to China’s growing influence in the Pacific region. For the first time in history, a US Navy warship, the Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Canberra, was commissioned at a ceremony held at an Australian naval base on Sydney Harbor, symbolizing the nations’ shared commitment to upholding the rules-based order.
Commissioning Ceremony:
The USS Canberra, designed in Western Australia by local industry, officially joined the US Navy’s active fleet during a noteworthy commissioning ceremony. Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles expressed pride in hosting the commissioning of the ship, named after the original Australian cruiser HMAS Canberra, which was lost during World War II while supporting US Marine landings on the Solomon Islands.
Australian-US Joint Military Efforts:
Australia’s northern region is set to develop military facilities as part of a broader effort to increase the US military presence in the area. The US “Indo-Pacific Strategy” focuses on collaboration with regional allies to shape the region’s dynamics, particularly with regards to China’s expanding influence.
Multinational Military Exercises:
In the spirit of fostering collective security, military exercises involving forces from Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Republic of Korea, Tonga, Britain, Australia, and the US are underway across various locations in Australia. The exercises encompass a wide range of scenarios, including mock land and air combat and amphibious landings.
Japan’s Significant Involvement:
The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) demonstrated its capabilities by launching a surface-to-ship missile off Australia’s east coast during the exercises. This marked the JGSDF’s first such test in Australia, emphasizing the region’s importance in bolstering regional security.
Germany’s Inaugural Participation:
Germany’s participation in the military exercises marks a significant step as the European nation seeks to enhance its presence in the Indo-Pacific region. With 210 paratroopers and marines taking part, Germany’s involvement underscores the global commitment to maintaining stability in the area.
AUKUS Project:
Announced in March, the AUKUS project involves the US and Britain assisting Australia in acquiring a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen Australia’s naval capabilities and reinforce the strategic partnership between the three nations.
The commissioning of the USS Canberra in Sydney serves as a momentous event, highlighting the ever-closer defense ties between the United States and Australia. Both nations, along with their regional allies, are taking proactive measures to counter challenges posed by China’s expanding influence and maintain security in the Indo-Pacific region.
