United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres delivered his end-of-year news conference, He urged world leaders to adopt new, serious steps to combat climate change, warning that current efforts fall short of what is required to prevent catastrophe. Additionally, Guterres stated that he intends to host a summit of world leaders to discuss addressing climate change.
Antonio Guterres will convene a “Climate Action Summit” to accelerate an urgent response to the climate crisis. He says the Paris Agreement’s goal of capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius is “gasping for breath”. The gap between actual greenhouse gas emissions and the amount allowing the target to be met keeps growing. The U.N. chief said he will keep pushing for what he called “a Global Solidarity Pact”.
